Have a long healthy happy retirement Champ youve earned it
One of the real FIGHTERS !!!!!
Here is to hoping it sticks! Shame he had so many cancelled fights. Generally overrated on this forum during his peak, he was a very tough fighter and earned his way toward the top of the CW division for a while. Several fun fights, for sure.
No one ever schooled him and he left with a damn fine resume.
I am still baffled by the scoring of that fight but I don't remember any controversy? I must have seen it wrong I guess which is weird as I wanted Gassiev to win! Good luck to Lebedev in retirement.
Well Ancient Roy Jones Jr was schooling him at times throughout their bout. RJJ landed some good shots in that fight, used Lebedev's aggression against him with well timed counters. Remember that 10th round, RJJ hit Lebedev with a counter right hand that sent him crashing into the ropes, Lebedev looked to be in real trouble there, only to see Roy get stuck on the ropes in the final seconds and Lebedev got in a looping right hand that caused the stoppage. But I mean despite how it ended he was getting schooled by RJJ throughout that bout.
Had a pretty good career, was always a fun watch.
I bet Hearn is absolutely gutted, he wanted Okolie Vs Lebedev PPV £19.95.
Stacked Card, Tommy Coyle, David Price, Dave Allen, Chisora and a "real 50/50 trade fight" for the southern area title fight.
even I'm gutted.
did well on his ability, the way he tried to smash shot roy jones back into consciousness when shot jones was flat out has bizarrely become his youtube career highlight.
Former world cruiserweight boxing champion Denis Lebedev announced his retirement Thursday at age 39, ending a lengthy and colorful career in the ring.
Lebedev, who hasn’t fought since November, was hoping to face the then-unified cruiserweight champ Oleksandr Usyk, but the Ukrainian moved up to heavyweight in March. Then, after a planned bout against Frenchman Arsen Goulamirian collapsed last week, Lebedev apparently decided to retire.
“The time has come to leave elite sport,” he said in a video posted to social media (translation via Twitter). “As a real man, husband and father, I must focus on my big family and try to give as much attention as possible to those closest to me.”
Known for entering the ring in Russian paratrooper uniform, Lebedev won the interim WBA cruiserweight title in 2011 against James Toney and successfully defended it eight times through 2017.
He also won the IBF belt in 2016 from Victor Emilio Ramirez but lost it seven months later to fellow Russian Murat Gassiev.
Lebedev finishes with a 32-2-1 win-loss record, 23 by knockout (a loss to Guillermo Jones in 2013 was later changed to a no-contest when Jones failed a drug test).
Interestingly, some argue that Lebedev might best be remembered for two losses: the one to Jones that was changed and a controversial split-decision against Marco Huck for the WBO cruiserweight title in December 2010.
World of Boxing have been uploading some of the great man's fights to their official YT channel
Good call, champ. With some of the wars he had taken part, I could only imagine how he could manage to survive them. In any event, he is a true warrior in every sense of the world. May you live a good, long life and don't pull a Mayweather and come back out of retirement.
I had it a draw, early on it looked like Gassiev was gonna knock him out but somehow Lebedev managed to turn it round and finished the stronger.
