The first fight was crazy, even though he popped Guillermo ate his punches for breakfast and came back to stop him
Jones' career is so unique. Just for people that don't know he turned pro in 1993 at Welterweight and at 6'4. He engaged in very close fights with Laurent Buadani for the WBA 154 title in 1998 (coming away with a draw and a split decision loss He trudges along winning fights here and there then fights WBO cruiser champ Johnny Nelson to a draw in 2002 (back when the weight limit was 190) Keeps going losing a split decision to Steve Cunningham (of Tyson Fury fame) but manages to KO decent cruisers Kelvin Davis and Wayne Brathwaite until he picks up the WBA cruiser belt from Firat Arslan in 2008, defends it a few times and even managed to KO Lebedev (changed to a NC due to positive drug test, though I remember there was controversy there, or maybe not). He popped up out of nowhere last year and lost a decision to Vitaly Kudukhov at heavy.
That first fight was a real WTF moment. First on how Jones had made the weight (that was clear afterwards), how he kept enting shots and walked trough them (also clear afterwards), and how Lebedev kept going with that eye. Then the WTF moment on why it took so incredibly long before the result was overturned and actually getting a rematch that eventually never happend due to Guillermo popping dirty again. Why is there a second try for a rematch between a completely shot Lebedev and the corpse of Jones? Senseless!
I agree and yet there is a part of me that wants to see Lebedev get a little revenge. Hopefully Wlad Putin himself supplies him with some Ivan Drago undetectable Olympic-style super PEDs and he beats Jones so hard that Guillermo sees Jesus and repents.
