i cant speak for all of the UK fight buffs, but on the whole we dont,t rate or talk much about Andries, he is viewed as a clumsy, crude, boxer, with no discernible skills, when it comes to LH talk, the likes of Conteh, ( No 1 for me) Mills, Harvey, even Finnegan, are referred too, much more than Andries, unfairly really, but his style , albeit he was a champion, nether went down well.
He was a crowd-pleaser though, and he really had longevity. Retired in the mid 90s at about 45, a respected fighter
They were both fun fighters to watch when they were on. Andries trilogy with Harding was an excellent series.
Andries got a ton of respect when he was the only British fighter for periods in the 80s with a world title. Even in that era there were potentially 51 titles, so to a degree it shows how weak UK boxing was at the time.
Great post. I too see the similarity. Btw...This fight was the start of Hearns chin going from a pretty good one to his Achilles heel (the Roldan and Barkley fights completed the transition)....the fight superficially looks like a wild massacre...the British commentary dont pick up on it blinded by Tommys aura of superiority....but Andries twice hurt Hearns badly...but Tommys chin was a very good one at this point in his career and he hid it well. One was a huge right hand bang on the chin that momentarily caused Hearns legs to freeze as if jolted by electricity...the other was a wild left hook that although a cuffing shot floored Thomas. After these 3 fights fights..tommys chin and legs totally went during the rest of 1988/89...Emanuel Steward instigated specified leg strengthening conditioning to rehabillitate him including a special bike
Dennis was as strong as an ox and always in great shape.looked easy to beat .doing it was a different matter.
