Take the version of Denny Moyer that fought Griffith, Paret, and Robinson, and pit him against todays top guys at 154; how would he do?
*Moyer He'd be at least on a par with someone like Martinez, in my opinion. Definitely a belt-holder.
I think Denny would do quite well against todays 154 pounders. Williams' height, reach, and work rate might all be problems, but I am 100% certain Moyer was better than Carlos Quintana, so you have to give Denny a good chance in this one. Martinez's speed and movement gives everybody problems. Denny could clinch and bully fairly well. He might be able to just make a real ugly fight that neutralizes a lot of Sergio's advantages. Cotto would be my favorite opponent. Denny could box and counter. Plus he was bigger than Cotto. I think this might be a really good fight. Angulo would get his ears boxed off. He'd have a punchers chance at best. Cintron? If Cintron is at his best, I have no idea how this fight might go. Margarito might prove to just be to damn tough.
Moyer had a helluva run early in his career. An underrated streak of wins for sure. then again i'm thoroughly sleep deprived right now and could be confusing him with someone else from that era.
You're probably not confused. Moyer was 21-0 when he lost to Don Jordan, and the Griffith, Paret, and Robinson fights came right after that.
I'm waiting for one of our historians to post a proper break down. Don't tell me there's no love for Denny on ESB!
