I was searching through some old fights on YouTube and came across Sugar Ray Robinson vs Denny Moyer. They had two fights. Robinson was ancient by this time but he still put on good shows. Moyer was only 22. I know very little about Moyer but in watching him I was very impressed with him. He was tough as nails but he also had quick hands and was countered Robinson with ease. They split the two fights but Moyer probably won both. I looked at some other fights and apparently Denny Moyer fought everyone. He lost a title challenge to Welterweight Champion Don Jordan. He even fought Monzon. Anyway interesting career and I am gonna check out some of his other fights. Any insights on Denny Moyer?
Good fighter. Sad story. I thought Robinson won the first fight legit imo. He broke him in half with bodyshots that really hurt Moyer. Moyer fought all over for years and whats crazy is that he fought Robinson as an old man and as a young amateur Robinson fought Moyers uncle. Too much of a warrior for his own good.
Check out the documentary After The Last Round which was produced by the Moyer family and is about Denny and his brother Phil. Itll make you think twice about encouraging your kids to box.
The most heartbreaking scene is watching the father, who encouraged his sons to box, now frail and in his eighties having to care for his boys like they are infants when they should have been caring for him at that stage of his life.
