This content is protected If you feel like you've been waiting an eternity for the return of Cuello - relax, it has only been 44½ months! That isn't even four whole years! For newbies who don't even know who Cuello is - well, for a period of some years he was described, not inaptly, as top 5 among Filipino active boxers (quite a ways behind Pac but neck and neck with most of the rest of the pack) and top 5 p4p active outhpaw boxers (see previous note)...and was close to establishing himself as the man at straw (arguably robbed against Xiaochong Zhong despite even then only having the use of a single arm). He more than lives up to his moniker. Amisa is a professional loser who nonetheless is reliably game with a deep bag of crafty veteran tricks on most nights...until (or unless) he gets badly hurt. Not entirely lacking in power but all his kayos were at domestic Indonesian level which is...hardly inspiring. FYI this will be on very early. 2pm local time in Angono Rizal is 1am EST (so this will be an hour after midnight on Thursday night for us on the American east coast...9pm on the west...) Airing live on ESPN5.
ITS BEEN SO LONG. Where did you even get this news IB i haven't heard anything about this? Anyway thank goodness he's back although at 33 his world title prospects are nonexistent. This guy was rumoured to fight wanheng back at 2015 and ioka was supposedly ducking him back then. Really disappointing that cuello's career is big WHAT IF
This is a major chump move of me to come in this thread all negative like I'm about to, but... Denver Cuello at his peak was very overrated. His prominence coincided with Filipino's owning boxing forums and youtube comments at the time and that is the only reason he became a "little guy" (sub-126, sub-118) that developed some kind of following and was pushed. Now he is viewed as a "what if" by some simply because he failed those expectations.
Well he has a respectable resume and his injuries really did set his career back. So yeah the what if is pretty legit.
Injury AND mismanagement. He has been teasing a ring return for a couple years now. Glad to see him finally back. He was definitely a world champion in the making before that injury caused him to lose against Xiong. It was a close fight but I thought Cuello lost by a couple points, mainly because he was only fighting with one hand in the last eleven rounds. Dude savagely knocked out Ganigan Lopez, who became a pretty decent world class operator/world champ in a couple years, in two rounds. He was also robbed of a third round knockout against another good future world champion in Juan Hernandez in what is one of the most outrageous and disgusting rulings I’ve seen, giving Cuello a DQ loss. Cuello was really, really good a couple years ago. Don’t know what he has left after all these years and all the injuries but I hope he still hasn’t enough left in the tank to come close to what he was.
I'd ask how you scored the Xiong fight, but I suppose in a certain light that is really immaterial - even if you gave him the nod there, it would be his biggest achievement (with Muhammad Rachman being ancient when they fought), and struggling to a close scrape over Xiong doesn't exactly justify the hype that Cuello (rightly or wrongly) did generate back in the day...even if you factor in him not being 100% heading in... Personally, I always really liked his style and may have been guilty of a little excess optimism where his chances in big match-ups (that never materialized) were concerned...but it would have been really interesting to see how the likes of Chocolatito and Ioka would have dealt with him..
