So the quality of the opposition doesn't matter anymore? I could fight 50 tomato cans and knock them silly. Would I be an ATG with a 50-0 (50 KO's) record? Wilder is yet to face a top-10 fighter and he almost had 40 fights, pathetic
Braddock was supposed to be a tomato can for Baer. Clay was supposed to be a tomato can for Liston. Carnera was supposed to be a tomato can for Sharkey. Smith (a late sub) was supposed to be a tomato can for Witherspoon. The list of tomato cans who knocked off a champ in his first or second defense is quite long. When they win, they aren't tomato cans. When they lose, they still are. Wilder was supposed to be a tomato can for Stiverne, wasn't he? On this board he certainly was. :hi:
Szpilka and especially Duhaupas win by stoppage are respectable wins. Wilder seems to get better and better every fight he does. I was never a fan of this guy, but he is earning my respect more and more with his victories. At the moment I think he is at pretty much same level as the number of top dogs of the division are and it makes heavy the most interesting division that it is supposed to be. He is maybe not very impressive skill wise, but the athleticism, speed and power compensate a lot in heavy weight division.
I always find thoughts like this funny. Now, first let me put the disclaimer: This is not a comparison with Roberto Duran, or to imply Wilder is in ANY WAY on the same path in regard to boxing history. However, I will just say this in regard to the OP. When Duran fought Buchannan for his first world title, the argument was "Duran hasn't fought anybody but cab drivers from Panama." As I would say about Duran back then, I would say about Wilder right now: "Yea, well he's knocking those cab drivers out like he's supposed to." Buchannan lost by TKO by the way. To the "unproven" Roberto Duran. It was actually supposed to be a tune up for him. Oops. Too busy looking at the guy's record, instead of looking at the film. Resume, doesn't mean everything. It was also the OPs line of thinking that had people disregarding Kelly Pavlik going into his fight with Taylor. Oops. Resume doesn't mean everything. (I picked Pavlik to KO Taylor in the later mid rounds btw. Not based on resume, but based on what I saw in their recent performances.) The problem with Wilder is his lack of a serious amateur pedigree. The man clearly is not a "polished boxer." Footwork is an issue, and gives him the appearance of being awkward as he can be off balance when he throws a punch. Again, lack of an extensive amateur career (overall experience) is the main issue I see. The man is certainly physically talented.
the NutHuggin'/Slobbin' of Wilder on this forum is pathetic... creepy... disturbing... etc... it's mostly whiteboys with Jungle Fever too!!! :yep :hey :deal
Give me a break, mate! Wilder is a so-called world champ. His last three opponents were Molina,Duhaupas, and Szpilka. Molina is a journeyman,Szpilka a Polish hooligan who can punch a bit but who is no match for any top20 fighter, and Duhaupas, the little known Frenchman plays in Charr'r and Teper's league.Wilder has had a tough time with all three of them.He is earning your respect with those wins,eh! Really??? What kind of a fight fan are you, mate! Povetkin's last three opponents were Charr,Takam, and Wach. Charr plays in Duhaupas and Szpilka's league-he would probably beat Molina quite easily. Wach-he is probably better than both Szpilka and Duhaupas, but I would only bet my money on him if forced. Takam-he is head and shoulders above both Duhaupas and the Pole. Just compared their last 3 opponents-all in all Povetkin's pro record is light years ahead on Wilder's poor one.And Wilder is a reigning champ with 3 title defences. What a disgrace and shame he is!!!
