Deontay Leshun Wilder vs. Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua

I don't think a Wilder win is automatic. Let's say this fight does happen next January.

• Wilder will be a few months past his 38th birthday
• He will have fought exactly 1 round in the preceding 27 months

And that's even before we're talking about stuff like Wilder's tendency to be caught by the most basic tricks, his untrainability, the fact that he now has more mileage on his clock than AJ. I could go on.

This is pretty close to a 50/50 fight.

 

Wilder KO. Both guys are vulnerable though.

AJ can KO Wilder if he lands, but Wilder will land big first. I see a tentative AJ pushing Wilder back with his jab and then when AJ finally commits, Wilder will catch him coming in and that's all she wrote. The speed of Wilder's right hand is really hard to deal with.

I was actually surprised at how much Helenius was hitting AJ early on tonight.

That is an astoundingly good price for Wilder, if it stays like that by the time the fight is officially announced, I'll be betting heavily on Wilder by KO.

 

Call me crazy, but I could still see AJ winning this one. As was pointed out earlier, if the fight really is in January, Wilder will be coming in with barely any activity in two years. Sure, power is generally the last thing to go and that's what he typically relies on almost exclusively, but the rust could end up playing a big factor, especially since we don't have a solid answer on just how good his chin is since the Fury loss.

But AJ absolutely cannot fight him like he did these past two times. He was letting himself get tagged way too much both times out. That ended up working out fine in outpointing Franklin and eventually knocking out fragile chinned Helenius, but he can't afford to be that way against a big puncher like Wilder.

 

Wilder lands his right, AJ will mentally give up first, then it’s matter of time before he’s KO’ed or a stoppage.
