TuscaloosaNews.com has changed their tune since last night. :blood "Referee, Keith Hughes, waved an end to the bout prior to the beginning of the 2nd Round due to a cut that had opened over Nichols' right eye. Early in the round, Wilder opened the cut with a combination of left jabs and hooks that set up his right-hand calling card. The blood trickled down Nichols face, and then Wilder went to work on the big man's nose, which was bloodied in the second minute." So instead of knocking Nichols out with his third punch, he cut him up with three minutes' worth of combos. Why the hell would they have gotten it so wrong?
I think Wilder has more raw talent than Fury, but, the question everyone should be asking is; "Can Deontay do this?" - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdFP-R_LYSM&NR=1[/ame]
It's time to step up Wilder competition. He is more than ready to take on good journeymen to will test his skills, stamina, durability and last a few rounds. Would be nice to see him get tested in about 5 fights against competition like: Zuri Lawrence, R. Hawkins, Page, Firtha, K Montiy, J. Long, K Burnett, Batchelder, Mark Brown, Homero Fonseca, Damian Wills, D. King, Raphael Butler, Olubowale, Saleem, Horace Grant, Salif. After some good seasoning, he could go for fights that will shoot him up the ratings. Names like: Abell, Gavern, Estrada, Rossy, Nagy Aguilera, F. Lawrence, T. Walker, Whitaker, Grano, Mollo, Guinn, Whiterspoon, M. Grant, D. Holmes, Vargas, McCall, Quezada, Tor Hamer would be helpfull. A good plan, all fights Wilder can win, IMO, would be: August - Page/Salif September - Hawkins/Olubowale October - K. Burnett/Butler November - Batchelder/Brown December - Zuri Lawrence/Grant February 2011 - Firtha/Vargas/F. Lawrence April - Abell/Witherspoon/Whitaker June - M. Grant/Aguilera/Gavern August - Rossy/Estrada October/November - World title eliminator
2012+ Wilder had very little AMT experience, so just take him along slowly. By 2012 he should have 20+ fights under his belt and then fight fighters of a say John McDermott, DaVarryl Williamson, etc. type level. That would be a nice little step up, and then see what happens after that.
Anybody who knocks him for fighting these level of opponents is a moron. The reason why he isn't fighting guys on the level of Fury is, is because he doesn't have the experience Fury does. He'll step up real soon, but don't expect it to be well known contenders, it will be guys with atleast winning records though.
I think he has the tools to be a champion. I think he needs to step up in compotition. He has 11 fights already. I'm not saying he's ready for the big time right now. However he should be fighting 8 rounders against quilty 8 round heavyweights. I think if he's managed corectory he should be ready for a championship fight after 20 fights.
idk man, Kobiashi just got arrested for crashing a Hotdog Eating contest. that kid might be a bit too tough. :yep
can we atleast agree that Wilder is pretty much fighting weaker competition right now then he was in the Olympics? Which is a pretty good reason to step the kid up a little. The only thing that his handlers holding him back tells me is that they're not sure he can transition to the Pro stage, that he can't seem to learn... :huh
Wilder has the tools to be a serious heavyweight but I wouldn't rush him since he is raw. He does need to face guys on a slightly higher level just so he can get in some rounds and see some different looks. Wilder is a potential cash cow. He's American, Olympic medalist, ko power, and should compile a very glossy record. Give him time to develop and gain exposure and in a couple years he could be a star.
He needs work on his balance/footwork. He reminded me a bit of a HW Paul Williams. Almost looks a little like him. I like him, and think he has potential.
Of course he is, almost every debuting HW prospect fights weaker competition that they did in the olympics to start off. They are sticking him in there with stiffs to build up his confidence and not to let him take unnecessary punishment early in his career. He is a quick learner as evidence by winning a medal after only 3 years after putting on his first pair of gloves, pretty impressive. I think he'll adjust to the pro game pretty soon and will see him step it up.
