this in a nut shell. My eye test says he hasn't been brought up the right way, that is a recipe for disaster.
I think Malik Scott was the ''light punching, technical boxer'' but we all know how that fight turned out. He has to step up some time. In my opinion he should've fought someone like Dereck Chisora a couple of years ago.
There's a reason why he hasn't. Its pretty clear that his management is well aware of how fragile his whiskers are, and they don't want to take ANY chances prior to cashing him out in a big money fight. The odd thing is, why Stiverne? Sure he has a belt, but Wlad is where the big money is. If the fight is on the level, Stiverne knocks Wilder out quickly. No question. But why would Wilder's management take the fight unless they knew that Wilder would get the victory? The whole history of how he's been brought along suggests that they only take "sure thing" fights because they know Wilder is a fraud. Which leads people to suspect a fix.
He couldn't even knock Charlie Z out and that puny little rail-thin unhinged loon is literally the most inept, feeble excuse for fighter in the history of human combat, not to mention a good 70 lbs lighter than him too.
I'll admit his chin doesnt seem rock solid (lol) however there really is no evidence that confirms he doesnt know how to recover with grit and heart to make a comeback during the same bout. The guy is a physical specimen and with all his blatant flaws he may very well show the pride of a lion in there when it looks like he's about to go. Beating Stiverne would be impressive no doubt.
I will give him credit if he beats Stiverne. There's sort of a Catch 22 involved in Wilder's career. I'm operating under the assumption that his camp, who knows him best, realizes he's not that great of a fighter. They could have matched him tougher, in hopes that he'd develop and have a chance to win a belt when the time came. On the other hand, they have successfully guided him to this spot where he can make the big payday without getting bumped off earlier in his career. This might be true of all boxers, but lately it seems like certain guys (Wilder, Stevenson, Quillin) suffer from delusions of grandeur about their supposed ring prowess.
Yeah, that Wilder thinks his opposition even approaches Stiverne - who has actually fought top contenders - is shocking. Wilder hasn't even fought fighters approaching fringe contender status, other than perhaps the Malik Scott fight, which many think was fixed. Otherwise, his opposition is about the worst I have seen a HW contender fight, in 35 years of following boxing. And he's done it for longer. Wilder fought the level of competition Tyson finished with in his first year or so as pro - for over FIVE YEARS! Think about it.
I disagree with some of what you said but you have some great points too. He IS overrated but IMO he could have been better if he was brought along the right way. I'm not going to counter your points because I don't think he is any good either. People knock him for his chin as if no one with a soft chin has ever amounted to anything. The REAL problem is that he has been matched so soft he has never had to adjust. He is the worst case scenario of falling in love with his power. Again..not saying he would have been great....but he could have been better.
Exactly. I don't think Wilder fans will disagree. He can still be very good but would be better now if matched tougher throughout his career.
Can't really argue with any of that. The way he has been matched hasn't helped him improve as a fighter at all.
Yeah he could have been a better boxer but would have taken a few losses along the way. Wilder reminds me of modern "boybands" nobody can really sing or play an instrument but boy do they sell records. Wilder is the equivalent.
