Yeah that's the best stance to take on the subject, Lewis showing more tact and awareness than most. Fact is whenever a modern day fighter says he could be this or that great fighter from the past it just sets you up to be criticised even if it's true. Like Holmes "Marciano couldn't carry my jock strap" comment.

Comments like these might get you attention but it mainly just puts the backs up of fans of the past fighters alienating potential fans.

Joe Louis was a cruiserweight by modern standards. If he bulked up to 220lbs then he might stand a chance but not at 190lbs.

The thing is, right now, he goes down as the 6th best World Champ of his era.....Does he not?

Wlad, Vitali, Haye, Fury and Joshua have all been active during his career.

Of course Haye is more debateable given his weak HW resume, but on the other hand he's won World titles at CW and HW.

    Wilder cannot beat Wlad's legacy.
Whilst he needs to defeat Joshua + Fury to get anywhere near theirs and Vitali's status.

Wilder cannot go down as greater than Wlad.
Therefore, he cannot be the greatest of his era.

Not really true. Wilder was 23 when he started as a heavyweight and averaged around 210-220 while being 6'6". Louis at 23 averaged around 197-207 while being 6'2". For larger opponents Louis came in closer to 206 and for lighter and quicker opponent Louis came in closer to 197. Bulking up would only make Louis slow and stiff. Joshua had to bring his weight down from 250+ down closer to 240, but even then I think Joshua would be best around 230-235.

David Tua ruined his career bulking up. Tua had a lot of potential and could've been a threat at 210-220, but once he started coming in over 225 consistently I knew he'd never be a champion. He already had fight ending power at 210, but by adding bulk he became slow and much easier to hit.

Max Schmelling a small german guy was able to beat a prime Louis so i think its safe to say a 6`7, athletic heavyweight with one punch ko power likely DW puts Louis to sleep. No shame in that. Louis is an all time great.

no shame in saying that the ATG number one HW would have maybe enough boxing skills to not stand stock still in front of WIlder and hang his chin out so he could hit him.

Maybe. I dont think anyone is saying Louis would have zero chance. I just think in a one off fight DW likely knocks louis out because the physical advantages are so immense.

I didnt say he didnt have the skills. I said Maybe he could win because of that skill. He was beautiful to watch in that ring wasnt he? Louis and Pep are my absolute favorite golden age fighters to watch.

Wilder is 6'6" at most and Schmeling would be the best fighter on Wilder's resume. In the first Stiverne fight Stiverne neutralized the effectiveness of Wilder's straight right by hitting Wilder with counter rights. Everytime Wilder tried to measure Stiverne to setup he ate a clean counter right. Wilder gave up on the knockout and focused on getting a decision, since even though Stiverne is a good counter puncher he's also a fat slob with no headmovement.

Schmeling is not only more experienced than Stiverne, but also has a better counter right. Schmeling also won't walk into a couple hundred jabs.

Schmeling is also better than Ortiz, since although Ortiz is skilled he like most Cuban fighters have a bad habit of keeping their head in the same spot when in range. GGG and Abel tried to correct this in Barrera, but Barrera just didnt get it and got a one sided schooling by Ward. Scott when the referee made it clear he had to fight was hitting Ortiz with crosses, by simply beating Ortiz to the punch and punching over Ortiz's straight left. I've seen enough of Schmeling to know he would be forcing Wilder to punch down and tire out those long arms. Byrd did the same to Vitali, who quit and was even too afraid to have a rematch with Byrd.

Until proven otherwise I think Wilder is the best current heavyweight, but being honest Wilder would be lucky to be a top 10 fighter and in the 30's or 40's. There were plenty of boxers in the old days that were taller than Wilder and just as athletic and they got cut down before ever making it to the top 10.

I think Wilder is very overrated. I think Fury and Joshua a little. They benefitted from the decline of Klitchko, but Wilder has a good mouth and knows how to talk and build himself up and he does have a good punch. His right hand is good, but Tim Witherspoon had a great right hand also.

If he doesn't believe this with every fiber of his being, at 6'8" or whatever he is, what good is he?

Who you talking about ?? Louis ? No1 heavy ?? No...Louis isn't fleet footed and Wilders fast enough to catch and hurt him from range
