That's not "prime" Cooney. Key word there. He had already succumbed to alcoholism. Literally 5 years after the Holmes fight.

 

Just a BS excuse. He succumbed to not being a complete fighter before fighting Holmes. He had scored one of the best wins of his career in the fight before Spinks. Alcohol didn't cause him to forget how to deal with angles four rounds into a fight with Spinks that he was performing competitively in.

Wilder gave angles and would make short work of Cooney for that reason.

 

He was very competitive with Holmes in the 15 round era. It's not a "BS excuse" Cooney had well documented drinking problems and he became an inactive part fighter after the Holmes fight only fighting sporadically. Wilder fought no one like Cooney during his reign. The closest was Fury in the 2nd and 3rd fights. Cooney would be on Wilders chest all night and would be way stronger than him. Also Wilder is no master boxer. He relied heavily on speed and just had a right hand. Cooney at his peak would be good. Wilder struggles to land the right hand when you bring the fight to him which Cooney certainly would.

 

Cooney never even beat a contender. HIs claim to fame is performing worse than Renaldo Snipes against Holmes.

 

Do you think Cooney would beat Stiverne? and the likes of washed up Arreola, Szpilka, Washington, Breazeale, Duhaupas etc. Come on now. Cooney was a good contender who fell apart very quickly after the Holmes fight due to personal struggles. Quit it with this revisionist nonsense. He wasn't unbeatable but there are champions who came before and after him that he would be favored to beat.

 

I don't think he'd beat Stiverne. He'd probably build a lead and then fall apart. Stiverne was tough and could counterpunch with power. Go watch the highlights of the Wilder and Arreola fights.
