Deontay Wilder is this generation's Max Baer ... if Baer had heart

I finally figured out who Deontay Wilder reminds me of.

    Max Baer.

The big difference is when Baer felt he was having an off night (Braddock), or his opponent hit him too hard (see Louis), he'd just joke around and take the loss.

If Wilder has an off night, he just trusts his power and goes for the KO.

Other differences: Wilder has a better jab, is quicker on his feet, is better schooled, and is not as sloppy on defense.

Surprised Wilder survived that round 7....looked super vulnerable...but he didn't get stopped in a brutal position...then came back for the KO....and say what you will about Ortiz bein 900 years old or whatever...he came to fight. That has to worry the other contenders. I thought Joshua had him before this fight but I may have changed my mind.

Ortiz for his age impressed me. He easily countered Wilder all night. To Wilder's credit he faced a southpaw for the second time and a good one at that despite his advanced age.
Wilder also showed grit. However Ortiz was in cruise control thinking he could decision him (how the cards had Wilder up is disgraceful I don't think anyone could justify that) and Wilder got him late with his power. Fun fight.
Baer is decent comparison but Baer had better chin and fought better opposition. Wilder has just 2 top ten rated opponents from ring magazine now.
Both guys have terrible technique and little skill.

To me the only thing that proved the round 7 is how very overrated is wilder.ortiz is nobody and was very very close to knock him out badly, the bell saved him clearly.and this guy is saying that he would have beaten tyson in his prime? Please... After watching this i have no doubt about tyson killing him brutally type bruno inside 4- 5 rounds.
The punches from wilder are horrible and open very wild

As Tyson himself said: "Everyone has a plan, until they get hit". And Wilder carries that type of heavyweight power that can bail himself out.

I don't see how people can say Wilder had better technique than Baer.
Baer didn't have great technique but Wilder's is shocking.
What Wilder showed us last night though was that he can come through adversity and has a fighting heart, and good on him for that.
He's went up a bit in my estimation ticked a couple of more boxes, overall though I simply don't think he's very good.

Wilder is very much like Baer with a different body type and a better psychology. He vindicates Baer.

Here is something interesting. A 214lb fighter just out strengthed and out punched a 240lb heavy handed power puncher. There have been arguments made here saying that such a thing was essentially impossible.

His power is unbelieveable. Watching the fight, it was clear that Ortiz had better technique, was the better boxer. Wilder's lack of proper technique works for him though, he really doesn't fight tall, Ortiz had no problem reaching him. As in other fights, his power makes him dangerous at any second during the fight. He is extremely fast, and gets great leverage into his punches, especially his right hand. He fights nothing like Lewis or the Klitschko brothers, keeping his opponents on the outside, using a heavy jab and setting up a straight right hand. In fact he looks very amateurish at times, I had Ortiz ahead in the fight going into the 10th round, incredible one shot power, and a great finisher. From footage I've seen of Baer, that's the closest style he reminds me off. His lack of technique is his technique.

Most of those concerned a certain 185lbs fighter against modern heavies. As JohnThomas said, its diminishing returns.

How the **** did the US judges have Wilder in front at the time of the stoppage?
