Nice try. Unfortunately you were trying to make a case upon the rare exceptions to the rule - and none of Ortiz' last few performances suggest that he's aged particularly well.

Interesting. I'd favour JP, a returing Fury over him for sure. Wilder is the favourite despite the hue question mark on how good he is and the likes of Pulev, Whyte and Chisora can't be ruled out IMO. Ortiz has that one highlight reel KO of Jennings he's earned this ridiculously fierce rep from.

No, we know that Luis Ortiz is not the same, the question was about an interview with the Cuban Luis Ortiz where he apparently said he'd fought Whitaker.

It is looking a bit doubtful though, as no one seems to be able to find the video any more, plus it could have been a joke.

The video is a different Luis Ortiz (Flores), a Puerto Rican born in 1965 who did actually turn pro at LW but didn't go very far.

Sam Peter wasn't in the U.S. in the mid 90s. He was in Nigeria. He's never lived in New York.

Jokes don't often translate well. Andrew Golota was known for telling jokes almost non-stop during prefight interviews (seriously). Most of them were bad jokes. But most people had no idea what he was talking about.

There are videos of guys like Mike Perez and Luis Ortiz competing in amateur tournaments for Cuba in the 2000s. Ortiz was always a big guy. He never fought Pernell Whitaker.

People need to wake up. There are plenty of boxers who have the same name around the world. At one time there were two Tomasz Adamek's who were boxing at the same time.

Luis Ortiz is a very common name.

Ortiz sparred with Joe Lewis, too. But people mistook that for Joe Louis.

Yes, it may well have been a joke. But Ortiz is probably older than he says he is regardless, he says he watched Muhammad Ali fight live for titles on TV growing up!!

Tell that to the pro boxers who say otherwise including a member on here who has sparred with Foreman, Tua and a plethora of other 90's heavyweights during the era.

Really? I don't think I'd favour Whyte over Jennings. People talk about Ortiz looking bad against Allen, he still looked at least a class above the Whyte against the same Allen. Like I said a few pages earlier, Ortiz\Allen was a gross mismatch. Whyte/Allen wasn't. So Whye and Chisora can indeed be ruled out given how well Ortiz sets up his punches against an opponent who comes at him, not to mention his superior footwork and jab to both of their's. And Ortiz against Scott and Allen was easily a superior HW to Parker against Cojanu. Parker looked average against opponents who can push him back. His power dissappears, he doesn't Counter punch and he has questionable workrate while fighting off the back foot. So that's a fight I'd easily favour Ortiz also.

That highlight reel of Jennings was a better performance than anything %99.9 HWs gave ever done. And It's not the fans that gave him that fierce reputation, It's other fighters' reluctance to face him. We hear Joshua and Hearn talk about Pulev and mandatory defence against him all the time, how many Times have you heard them talk about Ortiz who's also a mandatory? Ortiz is in the same position as GGG was back around 2010-2012.

At his age and on his last outings I think he's there to be taken out y someone willing to put their foot on the pedal and make him work.

I've said this about him way before he was talked about as a Wilder opponent - which I still find a very dubious proposition anyway.

In a recent interview Fury said that if he doesn't return to boxing he would be the only other HW champ to have retired unbeaten besides Marciano.

Exactly what do Vlad and Josh have in their arsenals that would prove insurmountable to Ortiz?

Was there a rematch clause in his contract when he fought Wilder?
