Looks like we might have a bright new star in the Heavyweight division. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3560484
I´ll root for him, seems to be a nice bloke, is a good story and a solid amateur. Hope he does good in the pros.
A bright new star? Are you being sarcastic? No disrespect to him as a person but he is hardly the most skilled of fighters, very easy to hit, pretty lazy style, wide, punches don't look to carry much snap but he has reach and reasonable hand speed when he bothers to actually throw. He looked nothing short of dreadful at the Olympics, and that includes in the fights he won. He is going nowhere in the pro game unless he is totally protected.
The young man has a lot of positive qualities that indicate a world of potential. I will name the ones that struck me: great height and length, exemplary strength, good power in both hands, and solid athleticism. Of course he is a green fighter and one cannot definitively forecast his career. He lost to a fighter who is not only significantly older than him, but also much more adept at international, amateur fighting. However, given the above factors, combined with the relatively poor state of the heavyweight division, I believe one can reasonably claim that his ceiling is rather high. Becuase of this, excitement about his prospects is both natural and justifiable. I will further add that claiming he may be a new star in boxing is not a ludicrous assertion. Given the paucity of talent, especially American talent, in the heavyweight division and his story, I believe he will be given every chance to make quite a name for himself. Take into consideration that he is likely to sign with GBP, which will equate to a likely connection with HBO. Finally, his progression will be adroitly managed by Shelly Finkel who knows how to bring a fighter along. He's not going to be rushed into anything too quickly; his team knows that he is a quintessential prospect.
he should fight at cruiserweight for the first 2 or 3 years until he fills out and puts on weight naturally. being american and with tv behind him i can see him being marketed well. at the moment i agree with strike as to his abilty. i thought his division in the olympics sucked for abilty, russo should turn proffessional painter for his fans. wilder chin will have to be good as he leaves it out to dry a lot.
The guy he beat on countback was barely even a boxer. Wilder was in probably one of the weakest divisions on the competition, second only to the light-heavy division. The win that took him to a medal was awful, the guy was a wild, but slow, easy to predict plodder with no stamina and no defence. And he caught Wilder flush time and again. I agree he is laid back and relaxed, so much in fact that he seems like he can barely be bothered to punch sometimes. You are right the division is dreadful, but if Wilder does make waves then it will simply highlight that the division is even worse than it is now.
Yes hilarious, so because a few British guys state that Wilder is nothing you presume we are bigging up Price. Go and look in the Brit forum and you will that not one of us thinks Price will go anywhere and most think he gets starched at domestic level. That does not change the fact that Wilder is not becoming any sort of force.
I respectfully disagree. He has not shown me any signs of good power in either hand and his strength is totally unproven. He got mauled and shoved about at times by that lumbering oaf from Morocco. He does have good height and length but frankly that is useful if you are fighting at a lower weight and have a big advantage of reach etc. He will be fighting guys who at the amateur level would have been Super Heavys, he will still have a height advantage but we are talking about 2 or 3" over most of them. Being tall is not going to help him all that much.
