Povetkin, easily—especially in his prime. But even the version that was beat by Whyte would easily destroy the biggest hype job and paper champion of the last century in the heavyweight division, aka Deontay "My costume was too heavy" Wilder.
I choose Povetkin but for sure we must give Wilder his chance here. I would said 60-40 for Alexander. Sasha was destroyer in that time. They knew that, and they afraid soo bad that they do all what they can to avoid this fight as long as possibile. They actually got pretty not happy situation here because Riabinski back then was very strong promotoer. For (that's only my personal opinion) this drag fail test was scripted. A special second one. I understand that they can find some meldonium in one of the test- Sasha use it because it was leagal few moments before. They admit that they have no idea about this and must clear his name. Off course Wilder got already green light to do whatever he want... More suspicious is second positive test. Totally idiot way. I dont belive Povetkin is such massive idiot to take ostarine before Stiverne fight when he was tested hard and watching by organisation after first situation. They just want him to be catch. Stiverne probably knew all of this and being actor here because he even dont look ready on a weigh in and after he got his title shot WITHOUT ANY REASON. But end of the detective story imo Povetkin in Moscow, in his shape in that time will KO Wilder probably or at last won decision. Wilder is not Wlad Klitschko- he is not soo strong, he dont have footwork of Wład and cant clinch soo good back then. This + fact that he is not best on backfoot make me think that his only chance like always will be some perfect shot on panic mode but for sure he will not be favorite.
It wouldn't surprise me if Povetkin sparked Wilder out, nor if Wilder sparked Povetkin out. I think it would have been a lot closer than Povetkin having a 99% chance in beating Wilder. Povetkin is easily levels above Szpilka, although what I mean is I could have seen a similar scenario whereby Povetkin gets countered badly in similar fashion as Szpilka did. In addition, I think prime Povetkin against prime Ortiz would have also been a cracking fight.
And all versions of Wilder were overrated. Put it together and you have a small minority thinking Deontay could ever have won this. This should be a 100% Povetkin vote - there's levels upon levels in this... Wilder would have a punchers chance, at best - it's an 80/20 kind of mismatch IMHO.
Povetkin is a different beast to Szpilka. I think Both could win this fight. Depends if 2016 was still prime Povetkiin. Povetkin's style is awful for Wilder. Povetkin's movement was great when he was younger. I'm going Povetkin KO 8/10. 2/10 Wilder KO.s
Another vote for Povetkin. Not only did he have better boxing ability, but he also liked to mix it up close, where Wilder is not at his best. Wilder has a puncher's chance imho but is probably getting sparked out. He could have had the fight but in the end decided not to.
He was also very good at closing distance, unlike almost anyone Wilder fought in his career. One moment he'd be on the outside exchanging parries and feints, then the next moment he'd be in your wheelhouse throwing brutal multi left hook, uppercut combinations. He was also really good at countering over a jab with his OH right. Did it to Duhaupas all night long till the stoppage. Wilder could potentially stop him if he caught him really clean coming in, but it would need to be an absolutely perfectly placed and timed punch and I just see it as more likely that Povetkin would be battering him up at all ranges, but especially on the inside. Povetkin's chin was also super solid and he was great at getting back into a fight when hurt, so there's no likelihood Wilder gets a stoppage even if he lands. He didn't get one on Duhupas.
People change narratives to fit their agendas. Povetkin is great in these hypothetical matches but Wlad gets very little credit for beating prime Povetkin in Russia.
