Don't worry, this is not a hypothetical matchup. The question is, who between Deontay wilder and Amir Khan would rank higher in a historical p4p list? Deontay Wilder's strength was KOs. And this was Amir Khan's nightmare. Wilder was technically deficient while Khan was very adept. Both were alphabet champions. Based on their achievements and their resumes, who should be placed higher?
Have to give it to Khan, he fought better opposition, his win over Maidana is better than any win on Wilder's resume and Khan had some good wins over decent fighters like Alexander and Malignaggi and Khan actually was a unified title holder unlike Wilder. Then you factor in their amateur accomplishments, Wilder only won a Bronze, while Khan won a silver medal at the Olympics. Khan simply took more risks and so accomplished more so I'd rank Khan higher.
Speaking as a fan of both guys - Khan for sure. It’s that old frustration that will continue to plague Wilders historical standing - his resume. His die hard fans and the team around him just made too many excuses for him consistently not fighting the top names, regardless of his champion status. And I like the guy - just pained that we never saw him in the matchups the sport deserved.
