Wilder is lookin fine to me and his last few opponents have been better

better records more rounds and more experience

Wilder is young and has time on his side by the time he is 32 both Klits will probably be retired

and the division will be wide open and by then he will be in his prime and would have been a developed pro

as long as he doesnt get greedy and get in the ring with a klitschko he is fine

just needs a jab and to go a few more rounds to develop a gas tank

I agree he can learn some good defense but I do not think you can teach how to have a good chin. Bowe's chin was made of granite and I do not think Wilder's frame will support big shots to the head. However, you can teach a fighter to take a different psychological approach to taking a shot. A big part in taking punches is to, as you said, suck it up. Many fighters cave because they simply do not want to take punishment, Wilder is not one of those fighters I believe but only time will tell.

On to his opposition, I think he looked better in the short time he fought than he has ever. He remained composed and didn't go balls to the wall in this fight. We didn't see him wildly swinging with off balance shots. He worked the jab and picked his shots for the most part. The only bad thing I saw in this fight is that he feels he needs to retaliate after his opponent attacks, even when there is no opening. However, he set up the right hand beautifully with jab and sparked an opponent rather easily who is better than anyone he has fought. David Long had a solid record coming into this fight with some decent opponents on his record. He was the much smaller fighter in the ring and older at 39, but was definitely a step up from Wilder's recent opponents.

Ya know, we can call the guys Wilder is smashing stiffs, but he smashed Alexander who is a solid Cclass boxer just the same.

Wilder has the most overall power of any of the prospects aside from 34y/o Rodriguez and 28 y/o Mitchell.

His D is lacking, and his chin is a ????mark, but a fight with either Price or Fury would almost 100% end in a Wilder KO win.

No offense to the Brits, but Wilders speed and power DWARF those british prospects, and they'll likely NEVER come near a ring with him unless it's for $1 mil plus.

Wilder will step up here shortly, perhaps against a guy like Walker, Feilds, Ding, or even Pala who just outpointed Ding last night.

All these fights end in KO wins for Wilder with the exception of the hard to smash Dingaling Man.

Wilder has the goods i think but has a few things to fine tune and id rather a slow up bringing than a rushed attempt at a title

look at Grant he is like 40 and finally hitting his stride imagine if he didnt get rushed to the big time against Lewis and McCline and he had a good up bringing he may have hit his stride much sooner

The Bowe that fought Lewis in the amatuers did not have a granite chin, even for that age. Bowe mastered the art of sucking it up and staying in the fight. Bowe had crap defense, and he did too have one of the best chins in the world of boxing ever, and as well a very big heart, but Bowe took a licking and kept on ticking- not that he wasn't hurt, in fact, in the first two Holyfield fights and against even limited journeymen, Bowe was seriously staggered... but he learned how to take it and not panic. Wilder needs to learn that if he wants to stay in the game...

Having a good chin comes down to diet and weight training. Most guys who get ko's were ko's before the fight even started. Unless we are talking about a Tyson-esque brain scrambling ala Berbick, but even Berbick got up and wanted to fight on even though he was clearly scrambled. (there is no fighter in the world that had that type of concusive power the way Tyson did, except for Tua, Hearns and Julian Jackson- everyone else tries to catch you and then finishes you off with flurries.)

Let's be fair about it a bit, there isn't a concusive puncher in the HW division today... not even the Klit's. Maybe a Tua, but no one else out there has that punching power to totally fry your circuits the way Tua, Hearns, Julian Jackson and/or Tyson can/could.

When we speak of ko's in Wilder's case and about him getting caught by a good shot, we are talking Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams type of ko- the one that catches a guy flush on the jaw- whether it was a lucky shot or not- and the guy just crumbles. If this is the case with Wilder, a bit of defence and alot more of him having the proper diet and not being dehydrated before a fight can do wonders for his beard/chin/jaw!

Yes. Wilder can learn how to take a punch from these guys. He surely can. Most of the ko's are psychological man. Take a look back at Ortiz vs. Mayweather, Ortiz clearly could have gotten back up, but had resigned to the notion that he would lose so he let his mind tell him that he was hurt more than he really was. All Ortiz needed was a minute of holding, probably take a knee or two if it was early in the round, and wait for the bell and sit in his corner, drink some water and then refresh yourself.

Been there and done that.... knows how it is to get dizzy and dazed and how "giving up" when hit is much different than going down after you have been hit with a 2x4. There is no fighter to date, and it is very rare to find one, who has concusive power to do that to fighters in the HW division.

Yup. He has learned patience and has very good patience in the last few outings I saw him in. He just needs to keep that patience and learn how to see the shots instead of going all out on the ropes- and even then I see a vast improvement with his attacking on the ropes when he doesn't have an opening compared to having the shot on the ropes or in the center of the ring.

The lad is coming along nicely...

Zakman, how many times are you going to post the same comment?

Yeah, we get it. You think Wilder has a weak chin. You've never heard of a great fighter getting KO'd from a clean punch, and you've never heard of a fighter improving his technique diet, & mental attitude so as to better take a hard shot.

We get it, you don't know anything about boxing.
Please stop proving it with every post. It's really getting old.

I might be the biggest fan of Wilder on this site, I have followed the guy since the olympics up to last night's KO. However, I think he is outclassed by Price. Price I think has the best chance to dethrone the Klits right now. Fury does get destroyed by Wilder though.

    Curious:

What do you see in Price that is lacking (and can't be improved with training) in Wilder?
I agree he also has potential, but talk about only fighting bums...

Also, every time Price throws that great left hook of his (interesting that it kind of replaces the jab for him) he drops his right. Helenius would knock him into Tuesday.

David Price is the real joker. Price has nothing that I'm impressed with.

BTW: How come out of that same class and crop of young fighters who are in their late-teens to mid-twenties fight record, Helenius is moving on so much better and faster?

Stiverne beat both Price and Helenius in the amatuers, but to me, does not have the calibre that Helenius has at this stage of the fight game.

Do you think it's training, trainers, or simply that some guys have more committment to it or is it that Helenius just has the boxing knack and the ability to improve as the years go on, quicker and alot more steadier than Price and Stiverne?

Hard to say at this point. Definately beat Manswell and probably Scott.

He'd have to get up on that bicycle to beat Stiverne, although it is good chance he could do it.

Price is 50-50. They have so many of the same strnghts and weaknesses.

I think Wilder is kinda' like Helenius right now. They both look a little reserved in the ring, kind of saving energy & plodding along, though with decent ring generalship. Then suddenly, they both explode with ridiculous power.

You tend to say, 'they should be more aggressive," but heck they get the job done, don't they?
Maybe this is just what a really large fighter has to do. You can't expect them to dance around like Mayweather for 12 rounds.

Although I think Helenius and Glaskov are currently better fighters, I'm more excited about Wilder's chances than any other HW prospect/contender right now. I sure hope he hooks up with a serious trainer. (not to dis his current trainer, but he needs new ideas.)

    Go Wild Man !

    Watch how Wilder finishes Abron:
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxmuZMSF0Po&feature=related[/ame]

Granted, Abron was a true tomato, but that doesn't take away from Wilder's skill & power here. He hurt Abron, but then backed away to assess the situtation. The he went back in with a very accurate flury, and pulled back again in case Abron had something left.

Only THEN did Wilder go in with his final, VERY aggressive & accurate flury to pummel Abron into tomato puree.

That showed a lot of ring smarts. - and a lot of accuracy. This guy doesn't waste his punches. That's important when you're this large. Compare this with Price, who tends to just throw & throw & throw until something connects. That's a recipe for gassing out early.

IMO, Wilder's biggest weakness is also his biggest strength: He's ALL about that overhand right. He needs more variation in his offense, since any top-level fighter would know it's coming and possibly catch him with a check-hook.

Really? I guess watching Price right after Fury it makes him look like Ali. To be honest I haven't watched much of Stiverne but I will say that the Amateurs has almost no bearing on the Pro game. The Ams are a totally different game. I think slower and less aggressive guys like Helenius suffer in the Ams because their power is almost useless with headgear and all. Couple that with the fact that the object of the ams is to land punches however. It looks like a cat and mouse game.

    Good things:
(obvious, right hand, even though it isn't displayed here.)
    1. Right jab to the body
    2. Right hook to the body
    3. Circles the ring and has great ring generalship

"Ok" things that he needs to work on:
    1. Left jab and double pop with the lest jab
    2. Patience, and not get carried away when the excitement of the fight gets to you

Bad things or missing things he needs DESPERATELY:
    1. Left hook needs SERIOUS work. Have seen him try to throw it on several occasions, and it is absolutely dreadful.
    2. Smothers his punches when he comes in too close..

He can and should get better...
