Whooo boy, this should be good! Wilder may be raw & lacks some depth, but what a right hand he has. Easily the most exciting HW prospect on the current scene. Long seems to be an actual serious opponent, maybe the first Wilder has faced. This fight should tell us a lot about Wilder's future.
It's in Long's home town, too. Sadistic match-making. "Invite your friends and family to watch you get flattened!"
Sure, Long isn't Robert Helenius, but he's still in good shape. He beat both Raymond Ochieng and Kelsey Arnold, and they weren't bums. I expect Wilder to win, but the interesting question is HOW he wins. Will he be devastating, or just get by?
You have to ask yourself why wilder is being matched so soft. I really hope the rumours about him being less than stellar in the chin department aren't true. I know his chin was sturdy enough in the amateurs but he should be moving quicker.
Its amazing that Helenius, Fury, Pulev and Wilder have had about the same number of fights. Helenius has beaten three former titlists. Fury has beaten a fringe contender and two fellow prospects. Pulev has beaten a few legitimate former contenders. Wilder has gone life and death with Harold Scoiners and beaten no one of conseqence. Just saying . I hope Wilder developes into a contnder too, but I am starting to think that his handers know he is not the real deal.
Wilder has been sparring with Kevin Johnson in GA for the past month....I will say this about Wilder, When he makes a mistake he immediately corrects it! He keeps a notebook with him to chronicle his mistakes and how to rectify them. He has the dedication to be someone special in the HW division...!!!
Long is a journeymen of journeymen, but he is a giant among midgets. He does have an excellent jab and a great high guard. It'll be interesting to see how long before Long is in the high guard and if he's KD'd in the first, how long the ref, prolly Smoger, will give him to recover, if at all. Wilder throws a MEAN hook, and IMO, the first R hand he lands will put Long in the high guard.....the opening will be there for L hook, and he's down in the 1st. My official prediction is Wilder T/KO1, within the first 1:30 of action. Prtolly 2 KD's before it's officially called.
Exactly. When a fighter this deep into your career and still fighting tomato cans, it says something. It particularly says something when some of them have rocked the guy too. Wilder will be either be carefully maneuvered into some "cash out" fight, or he'll just fight nobody after nobody like Malik Scott or David Rodriguez, and then disappear into obscurity. It depends on whether he prefers making money or remaining conscious.
It doesn't work like that though. Making comparisons at this stage can be misleading. Because fighters develop at different rates. Wilder is MUCH more raw then those guys.
There's little doubt that Wilder's Chin is softer than silly putty. He was starched cold in the amateurs and he's already been hurt by a couple of these fat Alabama flea market fighters he's been matched with thus far. Given the video evidence we've seen of him AND the fact that his management is hesitant to put him in against anyone with a pulse, I'd say that it's plenty safe to say that he has no Chin. None.
By the time they had as many fights as Wilder, they were fighting better quality journeymen, like Cody Koch (25-1) Najee Shaheed (16-0) Marcus MacIntyre (15-1) Dicky Ryan (46-3) and Mario Schiesser (36-3). Wilder is only fighting low-level clubfighters, much smaller men or old men like Long. At this stage, he should be fighting decent journeymen like Dominic Guinn, Nicolai Firtha, Derric Rossy, Travis Walker, and Manuel Quezada.
