physically they match up well and this would be the biggest matchup around if prime Cooney was fighting today. Wilder’s right hand vs Cooney left, who would come out with a win and who would come out on a stretcher?
Someone will get knocked out. Cooney fought agressive and Wilder looks gawky bad defensively, no jab as well --> Cooney early or Wilder afterwards.
This fight depends soley on how each come out we know Cooney comes out blazing and if so and Wilder comes out hesitant Cooney blitz him but if Wilder comes out blazing his straight rights get to Cooney first and he stops him....I tend to think this fights all depends on Wilders fight plan
Cooney lacked confidence and his team did nothing to help that. In fact they made it worse. The talent was there he needed the rite team around him. Going off topic here. This could be a seperate thread but I guess you get the picture.
Wilder has a very good jab ,he just doesn't utilise it enough. Cooney had no head movement and didn't take a shot very well,I take Wilder to catch him with a right hand at some point and follow up with a fusillade that stops him.
I agree totally. Great post. They had someone who had the power to hang with anyone had he kept fighting often and gaining experience, but they let it go and didn't build on his Holmes fight, which didn't hurt his reputation much and had he had the perseverance of a Hearns or Duran (even though he did not have that skill level. had he just stuck with it like they did after loses) he could have won titles and been significant.. He had to learn more defense and he never did.
I'll go Wilder but he might find himself having to cling on having being rocked by Gerry early on . I'll go Wilder by 9th round ko in a entertaining one.
There wouldn't be any boxing in this fight it would be a pure dogfight, I think wilder wins though, not sure if which of the two has more power but deontay has the better chin and I think that's the deciding factor here.
I am still skeptical of Wilder, but he has moved beyond Cooney's level now. He has shown us the wins over current contenders, that Cooney never really did.
Cooney just happened to run into what was perhaps Holmes finest performance. Cooney like Gerrie Coetzee just lacked confidence despite having a awesome left hook. Would be a thrilling fight with Wilder coming off the canvas to roar back and stop Cooney after multiple knockdowns and stop Cooney mid rds.
