Dokes threw a lot more than one good punch. That doesn't remotely describe what actually happened in the real world. Weaver was probably in more than moderate trouble as he simply wasn't punching back - at all. This is why the fight was stopped. Now i would agree it was stopped a stage too soon but interestingly when this fight was dissected in here years ago many posters said it would be a fair stoppage by modern standards. I'm not sure i agree but quite a few good posters supported this. Holmes didn't knock the crap out of Weaver far more than Dokes did. It's pretty obvious. Dokes had him on the floor and possibly not far from being stopped even if the ref let it go a bit. He put a pasting on him and was still landing big shots after dropping him. Totally agree Wilder rarely started that fast and he wouldn't against a powerful puncher like Mike. It would be an interesting fight. Weaver snoozed in there at times unless forced to fight and this strategy wouldn't be his best shot against Wilder. He'd allow Wilder to sit back and eventually land that big right hand. Weaver would have to get in there and land.
Does Wilder get to be in his physical prime, too? Or is it 35-year-old Wilder with a half-dozen surgeries under his belt vs. everyone else in their prime?
You're right, I made a mistake and posted without watching the fight again. I was wrong, and apologize. And knock down or no, at the end of the Holmes fight Weaver looked real bad, to me yes worse than Dokes. Holmes worked on him for many rds, Dokes didn't. But that's just me. I also firmly maintain that Weaver was robbed on both Dokes fights. No disrespect intended.
Once Weaver starts landing FLUSH, especially early on...I just don't see Wilder enduring that. But as you mentioned, it depends on whether Weaver does his bizarre, sleepwalking routine....
Jeez mate it's all good, it's only boxing discussion and banter. For sure he was worse at the end of the Holmes fight after virtually 11 more rounds of wear and tear. Absolutely. He was basically exhausted and hurt as well. I also agree that the fight should have went on longer taking into account the period when it was fought. Joey Curtis, the ref, blamed all the safety talk and emphasis on Deuk-Koo Kim who had died against Mancini very recently. Personally i think the rematch was too close to actually call a robbery but many did score it for Weaver by a point or two and i can certainly jive with that. Perhaps @PhillyPhan69 has it on his radar.
Weaver could potentially stop him but Wilder could end Mikes night very suddenly as well IMO. I'd hate to be putting my life on Weaver.
Yeah, I don’t think I have scored this one...nor seen it in years. I always love outdoors venue boxing fights. TBH I don’t have much memory of the actually fight other than watching it with my Pop-Pop. I know who won (officially) and not much else. Good tip
