The guy just went the distance with Tor Hamer and had draws against a 6-0 guy and a 6-1 guy. No reason to believe he wouldn't have at least made it a couple of rounds, which is what Wilder's team was looking for.
I was at the fight. Wilder looks horrible to me. He doesnt do any one thing good. The guy he was in against does nothing but pad the record. I didnt see a good jab, he gave up his height and really he doesnt hit that hard. he lacks any punching diversity and his balance is questionable. Sorry it had to be said. He needs DRAMATIC improvement and a world class trainer from the get go.
I agree with you RightCross, he needs a better trainer, preferably Manny Steward or Nazim. I do not fault them with taking him extremely slow though, he is very raw and is going to need time.
Let me correct one thing, the guy does seem to heave reasonable punching power, but as we all know, punching power cannot really be measured until you are in there with willing opponents. I was hooping to be high on Wilder, much like I am with jacobs and ward. Wilder is just very raw, needs improvement in almost every facet of his game. Last night, I was also concerned with jacobs who looked to be very distracted when he was fighting. He even winked at a few people int eh audience.
Hes a skinny dude, really skinny up close. I talked to him. I think he was at most 220lbs. He needs to keep working into the frame. also his legs are really skinny.
I think he does have legit HW punching power, he put out some highly ranked amatuers with his power, but like you said we will see his true power when he increases his opposition. I only hope they increase Wilder's ring activity he should be fighting once a month, maybe twice a month and getting as much live experience as he can.
wilder weighed in at 215...he needs to be fighting better competition right now if he wants to improve. im not talking top 25, but better guys than hes been fighting...
The LAST thing he needs is a guy like Steward, who works with guys on a part-time basis. He's with one guy a week, goes away for two weeks, comes back for two days, away again for the weekend, etc., etc. Steward is a great trainer, but since Lennox Lewis he hasn't worked full-time with anyone. He may take on a guy for a training camp, but he's not there all the time. Ask Jermain Taylor.
what would that extra amateur experience have done for him? Because when fighters win an Olympic medal they typically feel they've accomplished enough and go pro.
Deontay was supposed to fight somebody better than Arnold, but the guy pulled out. Kelsey Arnold was the late replacement.
What do you expect? He only started Boxing back in 2005. Before 2005, he had never laced up a pair of gloves in his life. I'd say a guy with only four years of experience, who goes out and is the only American to win a medal, is doing pretty well for himself. Plus he has all ready showed he has awsome power as most of his KO's are from one shot.
:goodAgreed. I like the sound of this bloke, though. I'm gonna keep an eye out for him. Let's face it, the HW division needs all the excitement it can get at the moment. A legitimate American HW contender- I like Arreola but I'm not too hot on Chambers- would be brilliant for the sport.
