IF he knocks out Steverne and is crowned as WBC champion the American fans will begin to see him as a major sports figure. The reason that I say bigger than Mayweather is because the heavyweight champion is always the biggest star in the boxing universe. As good as Sugar Ray Robinson was he was never bigger than Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano and as good as Ray Leonard was he could never surpass the s****om of Muhammad Ali.
Simply Mayweather is a smaller guy and not a knockout puncher that Deonaty is...and Americans love knockouts, home runs, fast cars and hockey fights. Besides general sports fans (not necessarily the boxing purists) know that the heavyweight champion would beat the welterweight champion in a head to head match thus who is the greater fighter but the guy who would kick the other guy's ass.

America will embrace their next world heavyweight champion regardless of who it is.

If he knocks out Wladimir, then he has a chance to be a bigger star than Mayweather. Knocking out Stiverne makes him a true star in the American market, no doubt. But, he will have to be the "real" champion to approach Mayweather s****om. As long as Wladimir is still around and hasn't been knocked off, that doesn't happen.

I'm curious as to where you posters are from. I'm from New York, lived here my whole life and I can tell you first hand no one knows who wilder is and even if he beats Stiverne, another no name guy in the states, no one will have a clue who he is or care about him aside from hardcore boxing fans.

Boxing is not that popular in the states. It's popularity has been waning for a good 2 decades now in my country.

This. Wilder is not popular at all. Most people won't even know who he's fighting, let alone who he is.

Ali and Tyson were both bigger than boxing, they got invited to shows regularly and casual fans knew, STILL, know who they are. Being a great boxer is one thing, having great public relations is another. You're going to need both.

If he knocks out Stiverne nobody who isn't already heavily into boxing will notice or care.

American casuals don't know who either of them are.

Mayweather spent years building up his brand, facing stiff competition from his second year in the pros after coming, like Wilder, off an Olympic bronze medal. (though Mayweather was a star amateur, unlike Wilder, and was eliminated via robbery)

Wilder is six years in and hasn't faced competition as good as Mayweather faced in his 2nd. After six years, Mayweather was a two division champion, 12-0 (7) in world title fights, and on his way to cinching a spot in the IBHOF.

One key word was BEGIN to see him as a major sports figure. He would have to build up his visability as well as beat a few other formidable opponents such as Wladimir...however as he does it he will become a greater star than Mayweather in the eyes of the U.S. sports fans.

Wilder will not be a star. He will be a divisive figure if he beats Stiverne. Quite simply he doesn't pass the eye test for many fans and experts of the sport. So if he wins his supporters will embrace him while many will be less than convinced. Someone like Tyson it was obvious to even a casual fan who couldn't name one other boxer of the 80s that he was legit and possessed incredible talent. Wilder does not show that skill and therefore doesn't receive the benefit of the doubt to become a mega star.

    Wilder is going to sleep.

If the beer-swilling, flag-waving, gun-toting, school-shooting, inbred, illiterate, McDonalds eating, greasy-haired, trailer-living, mulleted, bible-fearing, racist ******s in America are waiting for an American heavyweight champion then they are going to be waiting for a very long time.

More heavyweights than any other nation in the world and yet you can't produce a world level fighter.

Actually, the major part of non-boxing-followers believes a more popular and higher on a p4p scale boxer is the strongest one.

Even between boxing commnentators and "fans" it's common to hear the p4p list described as a true strenght scale, the number 1 being "the strongest boxer in the world", etc..

While if that was the case, any p4p list would consist in the first 8 spots of heavyweights, with some occasional cruiserweight insertion in the last two spots.

Anyway, Wildest is gonna get sparked, unless this will be another freak circus show Malik Scott style.

But being the scum of the earth don king involved with Stiverne, it's even more improbable Wildest will be let to win.
