He got himself in the best fighting shape, óf that I've no doubt.

His abilities were proven in other fights I guess.

Are we sure that was his optimal fighting weight? His victories over his greatest opponents came when he was significantly lighter. The Jeffries victory was something of a vanity project.

That kind of "ranking" equates as being UNRANKED in earlier eras that were not so excessively watered down. The vast majority of ranked fighters today in no way deserve top ten ranking. Easy to be ranked equates to less of a need to know your craft.

Byrd was a nothing compared to Johnson. Envisioning Johnson when you watch Byrd is a very false and certainly bizarre vision.

Jeffries had one easy title defense, and it lasted 55 seconds! You see a quality champion should quickly dispose of inferior competition, which is what Jeffries did. He wasn't knockdown, taken the distance, or drawn...that's Johnson's bag of title defenses in too many cases!

Jokes like Ross who hurt Johnson, or Flynn, who according to ringside reports had him tiring, throwing far fewer punches and clinching a lot prior to his DQ, would last a combined 5 rounds with Jeffries.

The strategy Byrd used against bigger men is one I could see Johnson bettering.

Byrd has a much deeper resume at heavyweight than Johnson.

We can't be sure but I'm happy to say it's so.

Still trying to figure out how putting somebody on the ground, that was never KO'd or TKO's not a sign that he was in great fighting condition? Or am I supposed to believe his chin got dented on the alfalfa farm?

Those who had been in camp with Jeffries said he looked awful, as could be expected from a guy who had just passed the novice phase when he retired 5 years earlier, then had to lose a mass of weight, and who took no tune-up bouts... (possibly believing the fight would come off as fix in his favor).

Grinding down this version of Jeffries is no great accomplishment if we are discussing the top echelon of heavies. I might have to go with the Burns version of Johnson, but stylistically that gives us little insight to how he would handle a fighter of Chisora's physicality.

Give Johnson a month or two getting used to the gloves/rule-set and he would drill Chisora with uppercuts all night long. Dereck who is a game but (very) poor man's Joe Frazier has a bad habit of slapping hooks and is just the kind of basic bull Johnson toyed with.

And don't let the poundage fool you. Johnson, a very compact 210 lbs with 17" biceps, would be the stronger.

Ross landed one punch of any significance on Johnson.Johnson was not interested in quick ko's or taking punishment to win fights, he was content to win easily, outclassing and humiliating his opponents along the way.
Flynn did not win a single round against Johnson and the referee stated he fouled out to save himself from a ko.
Johnson finished his 78 fight career unmarked ,Jeffries had ridges of scar tissue over both eyes, a flattened, thrice broken nose, and a cauliflower ear ,all after just 22 fights. One was a ring artist the other a durable man who relied on wearing down his usually outweighed opponents , often by accepting their punches stoically. Now I'm not going down your hate route on this thread, so you can just do one.
