Round 1 Mathews is circling to his left and popping jabs into Luis' forehead. Mathews is using the perimeter, pacing squares around Luis, avoiding his steady body attack, Luis using double jabs to set everything up squatting in. Mathews never stepping on the Rainham Steel logo in the center of the ring, just keeping outside and jabbing. 10-9 Mathews
Can someone fill me in on this... Has Perez dropped his WBA interim belt after his last bout or do we have 2 interim "Champions" after this one? :blood
Round 2 Mathews is catching Luis' double jabs on his elbows or the bottom edge of his gloves depending on the altitude, which Luis keeps changing every couple of sequence restarts. Mathews is scoring his own jab high on the brow and circling wide. Borderline low blow from Luis, keeping a high work rate downstairs but not planting anything that really sticks. 10-9 Mathews, barely 20-18 Mathews
Round 3 Mathews is circling and popping the single jab with nothing behind it. Fairly one-dimensional so far but able to keep Luis out just with quick feet and the clockwork jab thrown in timely fashion every time Luis ramps up the pressure. Solid right cross by Mathews. Luis bores his way in low and shoulder-rams Mathews, who pushes down on him. The ref warns Mathews for holding. Luis is sticking close and whacking the body, countered with jabs on the way in and held. 10-9 Mathews 30-27 Mathews
Matthews being very economical, but very accurate, and not taking many shots. For a man that 9 rounds into the Coyle fight, i thought was finished, he's certainly surprised me.
