Golovkin was 30 years old and had a string of regular title defenses under his belt when HBO signed him. He was already training at the summit gym under Abel and was managed by Tom Loeffler , both of whom had strong ties to HBO.
HBO knew exactly who he was and knew he was a good investment due to his aggressive style and punching power. Everybody knows thats the style HBO loves to promote.
And yes HBO did protect Golovkin by keeping him away from Ward. They frog marched Ward to to 175 to fight Kovalev so Golovkin could continue bringing in wins and good viewing numbers.
Its clear they liked Golovkins style of boxing a lot more than American Andre Wards. The same goes for Roman who they treated like the greatest ting since sliced bread. The demographics of a fighter is not nearly as relevant as you believe it to be.
