Monzon's overall style may not have been "exciting", but really now, compare him to those "exciting" fighters. He isn't usually ranked by the the so-called experts when discussing overall power, or the "best jab" or the "best hook or uppercut" etc., but as a writer once said, "Monzon's best weapon was his boxing mind", and in terms of being a supreme ring general, and being in contol no matter who the opponent was or what the situation was, Monzon was on par or better than Ali or anyone. After 101 fights, Monzon had no marks or ring disfigurements that were apparent to the eye, and that was after fighting in the age of the 15 round limit.
The word I would use would be cerebral,Monzon was a thinker in the ring ,a great judge of pace.He boxed behind a probing accurate jab creating opportunities to drop in right hands ,he maximised his 5 111/2 height and reach ,but could duel close up to real effect, his hooks to the body sickened opponents,he wasnt the fastest ,,flashiest ,or hardest hitter ,but he probably was the most chillingly effective fighter who ever boxed at 160lbs.he had a massive ego and was arrogant and cool ,the methodicalw ay he broke a man down was allmost surgical,at times he looke all jmost ordinary yet he destroyed top fighters with alarming regularity.Monzon liked to say" Robinson held the title 5 tmes ,thats because he was beaten 5 times,as Campeon I never lost".
Does anyone agree with this ESB article about Monzon being the best of the 1970s? http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=6585&more=1
There have been a lot of great descriptions of Monzon already, so I'll step outside the box a little. Monzon reminds me of a blue collar guy, say a plumber or a mechanic. Just like them, he entered his workplace with complete confidence that he had the tools and know-how to finish the job that day.
Monzon at his best was one of the most complete fighters I've ever seen. I'd insist that anyone who has never seen Monzon fight, watch his fights with Benvenuti to fully appreciate him. One of the biggest points I would stress about Monzon, is although he sometimes looked awkward and stiff in his movements, he was deceptively fast and fluid. He could punch with both hands, he had a complete arsenal of punches, and very good defense/technique.
