I remember it very well, it was in Black and White, Recording Artist Robert Goulet was singing the National Anthem. The local auditorium where the fight was broadcast smelled of Cigar and Cigarette smoke

Well according to my late father a lifelong boxing fan he said i watched Clay vs Cooper in 1963 with him, i regret to say my memory of the bout itself is minimal, but hey i wasn't even aged 2 at the time.

I remember seeing many years later the publicity advertisement poster of the bout and it had some quotes of Clay on it, the quotes being attributed to Cassius

    Clay, instead of Marcellus

Richard is just being coy. He was at Sullivan-Kilrain with me and @Rumsfeld.

Hagler vs Leonard, about a month after it actually happened in 1987

Certainly not a crime, still, until Hearns starts to fall apart there's barely a meaningful punch landed. This is why it doesn't immediately spring to mind as one of the greatest for me. Definitely great in it's own way, I wouldn't argue against anyone who has it as their favourite.

That's just reminded me - I think the first non-heavyweight fight I remember seeing was Leonard-Hearns 2 in 1989 around my 12th birthday. My granddad had taped it for me and I went round his house to watch it.

The funny thing was that I genuinely thought that this was the huge, historic clash rather than their piddly little fight at welterweight that happened eight years earlier. Was I ever that young...?

I love the fight too, but I prefer both-men-down affairs as I'm sure @Richard M Murrieta would tell you.

I believe that that fight was on Closed Circuit Television as well, Muhammad Ali mentioned Thad Spencer, and Buster Mathis to announcer Don Dunphy, Angelo Dundee mentioned Eduardo Corletti. It was March 22 1967, before Ali's indictment for Draft Evasion.
