I'm rarely one to pull the "you must not box" card but... If you don't think taking flush shots the gut and liver slows you down and hurts more than being hit on the jaw...

You may have first hand experience in watching fights but you dont have first hand experience in the ring. Body shots, even those that arent right on the money, definitely do slow you down and take longer to recuperate from.

It depends on the fighter ,some fighters can take a good head shot but not a body shot.

It's safe to say none of them were no Julio Cesar Chavez fights.

Body shots can slow a fighter down.
They can also make a fighter drop his arms and hands as he tries to protect his ribs which opens up the fighter to head shots.

Body shots aren't counted as equal to head shots. They are an investment to open an opponent to head shots. Head shots can bust lips, cut faces, and close eyes. If the cut is bad enough, it can cause a loss by TKO (See Lewis-Vitali).

You need to see more fights then.

Some guys with iron bodies like Ali and Toney (obviously not literally lol) can take them. Others can't take them and are visibly hurt by them. Others get slowed down by them.

Roberto Duran gave Esteban Dejesus beatings to the body in their 2nd and 3rd fight (moreso in the 2nd), and stopped him in the late rounds when Dejesus was beaten and exhausted.

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad gave Marvin Johnson a horrible beating to the body. It was beautiful to watch. Floyd Mayweather's body attack slowed down Zab Judah, and also opened up shots to the head. Of course, it was Zab Judah, so it was kind of inevitable that Judah's early success wouldn't last.

Roy Jones won the first fight with Antonio Tarver by either slowing Tarver down with bodyshots or making Tarver too cautious with the bodypunches. Or both

Julio Cesar Chavez gave beatings to Roger Mayweather and Sammy Fuentes and they both retired on their stools in the latter rounds. He beat many fighters through brilliant bodywork. Roger claimed it was "stomach cramps". Yeah, getting hit repeatedly in the stomach and ribs. Manny Pacquiao's body shots paid dividends for him in the 2nd Erik Morales fight.

Mike McCallum slowed down and broke down Michael Watson, among others, with body punching. Shane Mosley's body shots on Oscar De La Hoya helped him in the latter rounds.

Everyone remembers Floyd's check-hook against Ricky Hatton that sent him into the ringpost, or his punches to the head, but what gets overlooked are those right hands to the body he landed throughout the fight. Everyone also remembers Joe Cortez being too involved and not letting them fight in and out of the clinches, but when he did, Floyd was getting the better of it by digging in many right hands to the body with his free hand. He also hurt Hatton to the body in round 8 with a variety of body punching.

Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Torres was a wild war and I suppose Torres would have gotten fatigued anyway, but Cotto's bodyshots probably sped up the process. Torres was stopped on bodyshots.

Froch-Groves II is a recent example. Froch went to the body in the middle of the fight which surprised Groves and slowed down his movement, just enough for Froch to land the killer blow.

That is how I have felt about bodyshots. They "can" hurt, they "can" slow the guy down.. but they WILL make the other guy drop his hands which will open up his head.

I'd also like to add, bodyshots can be really funny sometimes. I've had people land them on me and after we are done sparring bring up a bodyshot they landed expecting me to remember it, but I will have barely felt it. Other times I have personally just did a quick hook without power to the body, and I see the that they really felt it.

So sometimes even ones that LOOK like they hurt, dont. While others that can look like they dont hurt... really do.

Ask anybody who has actually boxed about body shots, head shots don't hurt but take a few hard body shots and your will to continue moving is really tested.

Its clear you've never been inside of a boxing ring with an opponent if you think body shots won't slow someone down.

Agreed but forget about boxing ring. I knew how much body shots hurt by the time I was 8 from a playground brawl.

Just about every fighter out there would choose a hard punch to the face over a digging liver shot or getting the wind knocked out from breathing wrong. Your adrenaline is sapped and you feel every single second of the pain.
