Janitor, I had read accounts claiming this, but the footage suggests that the knockdown punch was not a jab at all, but a long hook. What do you think? [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZQRExcO9aA[/ame]
You are right, it was a hook that closed the deal. Even so, it is noteworthy that Listons jab did most of the damage, and brought the deal to that finishing flurry.
:huhDid you watch the footage? He did no damage at all with the jab, which he only threw a few of early on. What caused the damage was the barrage of clubbing right hands and left hooks.
Janny, indeed nobody disputes how lethal Sonny's jab was. Youtube footage like Liston-Bethea is vital though in dispelling certain myths and legends, and this is the specific match most often cited in literary accounts of how devastating it was. Likewise, there is no question of what the Holmes jab really did do to Ocasio. The first knockdown was the one which Jaws had the most difficulty rising from, and it was by a jab Liston would have heartily approved of. Larry launched it very close to Ossie's head, and it went right through him, rather than catching him on the end of it. (Holmes-Ocasio does not seem to be readily available on line at the moment. It should be. This is one of the overlooked outstanding performances in the Holmes canon. Ocasio-Young I & II should also be available for context. Jaws was as well prepared for dealing with a great jab as any heavyweight contender of the era possibly could have been, yet Larry demolished him with it.)
Someone who flies wayyyyyy under the radar was Duane Thomas who possessed a killer jab that he would thrust like a rocket. I believe he died on the mean streets of Detroit. Scartissue
