Gonçalves de Mesquita Neto completely thrown off by Cushing's feints and directional changes, and propensity for suddenly attacking from different altitudes. Even blocked shots are knocking the Brazilian off-balance.

Cushing doubled a right hook to body and head, then drilled a straight left on the midsection that sent his opponent flying.

Cushing spends the rest of the round stalking, leading with hard right hooks or straight lefts, penetrating the guard of Gonçalves de Mesquita Neto. Continuous flurries on the body force the guard to lower and open up a lane for clean head shots. Gonçalves de Mesquita Neto down, or should have been ruled knocked down, sat on the ropes under fire. Ref missed it. Moments later, a real knockdown anyway. Officially second of the round, should be third. Half a minute remaining. Heavy looping left by Cushing, partly blocked.
