I don't think Garcia should be getting as much credit for the win when he came in over weight. This would have been unheard of years ago.

I agree to an extent but Haney did choose to fight on, many fighters have accepted penalty money over the years rather than call off a big fight. This is no different.

I was fortunate to play both codes. However you sound pissed at your lack of class privilege.

I agree although in this big a fight and Garcia wanting redemption after Gevonta Davis, why wouldn't he make weight? That to me is ridiculous because of the money and title. I think in today's boxing fighters are used to ignoring weight agreements in exchange for money and catchweights, so the titles have lost significance- ask Marvin Hagler what he thought about his titles, but in reality I think fighting someone at the weight they won a title is fighting them at their best. Garcia did not fight Haney at this best or at least completely fair. Like I said when my favorite era guys like Hearns or Duran or Hagler fought they came in at the weight- they wanted the titles and the titles meant a lot then. Maybe that is why Haney ignored the weight. But money is so important and he wanted that big fight. I didn't mention Ray because he is the one who started this nonsense of catchweights with Lalonde.

That’s a funny way of saying “I was out of my depth”

It's a real shame boxing doesn't have some global governing body, like FiFa for football or whatever.

I know those organisations have corruption too, but at least you could have a code of conduct and unified rules, like compulsory drug testing, same day weigh ins, and do away with all these different belts and sanctioning bodies, athletic commissions etc...

I think part of the reason why people are not quite as up in arms with Garcia and missing weight is he was in pants and drinking a beer on the scale.

Bottle of beer is roughly a pound, the guy paid Haney 500k to drink on the scale (or to look like he's drinking).

Yeah, imagine if Canelo would miss weight by three lbs and have a positive A test when beating Benavidez. You think there would be much "that's alright because Benavidez is a weight bully"? :)

This board has lost its bloody mind when it comes to Haney.

Agree that he showed some toughness there. With that being said, a rematch will likely end up the same way.

Not sure why they didn't make him weigh in w/o holding the beer and pants

Garcia still cheated by not making weight. The only thing that would be fair is rematch at 140lbs with Garcia having to make 140lbs or be suspended for a year.

Average or not, Garcia pulled a bait and switch with not making weight. A boxer shouldn't be put in the position of feeling like he has to fight at a disadvantage to save the promotion. As i said before, look at the difference between Corrales vs Castillo 1 & 2, 3lbs makes a difference.

There won't be a rematch. Neither want it. Haney will get his zero back and celebrate while Garcia will be satisfied with the win and say it was fair. Garcia seems to not care much about legacy. I bet he is out of boxing by 30.

If you think that 3 lbs was the difference in the Corrales vs Castillo 1&2 bouts, then we clearly don't view what happens in the ring from the same vantage point.

People can over analyze this situation all they want, but fact is, Ryan never used his body weight to gain an advantage in the ring. He attempted to use distance and then kept throwing the same combinations while also turning his entire back to Haney when he closed out. Haney got hit with the same punch that has repeatedly been said to be coming from Ryan well before this fight. And he got hit with it 9 times clean.

Throughout the sport, we have seen weight bullies use their size to an advantage to gin an upper hand in the rounds. Ryan is not a technician by any means in the ring. He doesn't break down his opponents. Can't even say he develops a game plan to combat the skill set of his opponents. He simply goes out and throws the same combination(s) he's been throwing hoping that eventually his speed can catch them off guard and put them down.

Had Haney had just average power....he would have been able to keep Ryan at bay and been able to dictate the distance and walk him into something. Haney is going to struggle with the top guys at 140/47/54 because of that same reason. The reality of it all is, Haney is far from elite.
