Well? The Tiger Who Fought Fullmer the third time vs the Turpin who fought Robinson the 1st time. Who wins and how???
Turpin's crouching stance and powerful jab might set him up to land some decent counters and disrupt Tiger's rhythm, and Turpin was physically strong into the bargain. But I ultimately can't see him outboxing Tiger or outmuscling him for long enough periods to take this. Tiger would eventually settle down, work his way inside and beat Randy down with those heavy counters. Tiger by decision or late TKO.
i think tiger woud struggle to get to grips with turpins style which was a very unorthadox style for that time, and by the time dick did get to grips with it, i think randy would survive some rocky moments late to win on points. I rate randy very high he is very under rated at his best he can beat any middleweight, well maybe not monzon but the rest of the best
I rate Turpin highly too, and he could spring a surprise if he caught Tiger on the right night and fought the right fight. But as against Robinson, I wouldn't expect him to win the resulting rematch. Bobo Olson was able to impose himself on Turpin when Randy was still a world class fighter, and I can imagine Tiger doing the same with much less trouble.
So was Fullmer's; in fact, they were very similar in a lot of ways. Turpin was effective from long range, but he couldn't take it so well on the inside. Tiger pressing him with the same fury he did Fullmer would have the worst kind of style for him. Tiger would barrel his way through Turpin's awkward trickery and hustle him to a decision or late stoppage win.
I was searching for Turpin and Tiger and found this so apologies for the incredibly late contribution. I don't think there's a middleweight in history who outmuscles or hustles Turpin - he would rag-doll opponents in clinches like no one I've ever see. Turpin was just naturally freakishly strong and that strength was further enhanced by his own obsession with making himself stronger still. If it's the Turpin who beat Robinson then I think he would just about clinch a victory over a prime Tiger. If it's Turpin post 1951, then Tiger wins.
Olson fought a man who was beset with personal problems and was a shadow of the fighter who beat Sugar Ray Robinson. I can't see Olson going the distance against a prime Turpin let alone beating him.
Very good posts here! These guys know there business I'm talking about both the fighters and the posters so I'm giving it another bump. Very good writing here!
It's an intriguing matchup! Turpin was super strong, I don't think Tiger would be able bull him in tight until perhaps fairly late in the fight, somewhere around the 10th round maybe. But up until then, it could seesaw a bit. Tiger TKO or UD.
Turpin was a STAND UP Boxer/Puncher/Fighter, Dick Tiger, Busy, Ploughing In and Powerful is a Hard Match for anyone... Good Fight, but Tiger should win, without much doubt. I was never won over by Turpin, he was Placed into position, and lost it as quick as his chances came, he is much like Graham in that sense, exploited & Hyperboled into history. Sadly like a lot of Brit Fighters.
Turpin was a big banger before he he fought Sugar Ray and adapted his style to suit. R.A.T could box behind his jab or mix it up when he wants. Tiger is one of a few middles who comes close to Turpin in terms of strength but he'll finish second in this fight. As re the Turpin fight with Olson, the Licker came in at 157lbs, 3lbs inside the limit, he obviously hadn't trained and his head and heart were elsewhere. Tommy Farr, writing in a Sunday newspaper at the time said Randy was missing his Welsh fiancee.
