There's an old boy who goes in my local. The guy's about 90 and is boxing mad, always end up chatting on to him for ages about the sport. Anyway, one question ive asked him probably more than once is who his favorite fighter ever is and he always replies Dick Tiger. I dont know much about the guy and i suppose i could just read up on him but thought id ask the classic experts what their thoughts or even memories are of Mr Tiger ? Just cos i can. Anyone fill me in?
Just looking at his record looks like he fought anyone and everyone. He died pretty young what happened there?
Cancer happened. He already had it late in his career. His fight with Hank is on youtube and definitly worth a watch.
Sorry to be thick mate is it vs Henry Hank or Hank Casey ? Any idea what was with the 4 straight losses in the mid 50's?
Henry Hank. Look against who he lost, funny no? He had no amateur career, was learning by doing more or less. Dropped quite a few fights in the beginning until he came into his own.
****in hell he fought at Belle Vue. Thats literally round the corner from where i live. Thats why the old boy loved him so much he probably went to most of his fights. I assumed he was a yank. I should listen more.
Tiger is one of the greatest middleweights of all time and one of the greats full stop. Nails. And don't be deceived by his K.O%, he could really whack. Fought in a (still criminally) underrated middleweight era.
He was from Nigeria I think. IMO his most imrpessive result is his win over Benvenuti. Nino was not an atg but a very, very good fighter with skills and power and at his very best. Dick Tiger was far past his best, already had cancer, just lost his lhw crown in a crashing knockout to Bob Foster, boils down to mw again to fight Benvenuti and beats him. Amazing feat IMO. But just one in numerous. When he lost his title to Griffith he was already considered past it but he moved up to beat Torres for the lhw crown. Not once but twice in a row. Also his series with Giardello and Fullmer. Great stuff.
Yeah was nigerian. good stuff lads thanks, im gonna watch some stuff. I need to get into some old school fighters.
Just watched the Hank fight and yeah i can see what ole albert was talkin about now. Tiger is relentless. Excellant jab too, and seemed the smaller man. Cheers for comments lads. I need to watch more boxing from that era, they just seem well....better. So top 5 MW's in history you reckon ? Think he'd do Hagler ?
Don´t know if he makes the Top5, mw is a very deep division historically. Top10 fr sure though. If Hagler fights him like he did Hearns Tiger beats him. If Hagler boxes him he has a much better chance. Still wouldn´t make him a big fav though.
