Love Dick Tiger. Besdies Hagler my favorite middleweight. It wasn't even about his skills or record, it was just how he refused to yield. He had such spirit.
Not top 5, no. I think Hagler would beat him with the right plan 3/3, but with the wrong plan he'd lose.
Why only 10 rounds? I cant believe he fought so much around manchester and liverpool, and at Belle Vue as well, literally a stones throw away.
Well, his manager was British, so brought him over from Nigeria because one couldn't get fights in Africa then to speak of. He perfected his craft in England. I love his fights with Giardello too; true boxer-puncher matchups.
I would not have the bottle to say that too his face; Tiger was very much Biafran and helped in the ill fated war of independence. If you can get your hands on it, Adeyinka Makinde's Tiger book is excellent: This content is protected
He still had some good fights in him late in his career: Repeated W15 over Jose Torres for his first LHW defense. Won by KO 12 over Roger Rouse in his next LHW defense. Even tho knocked out for the first and only time by Bob Foster, he was holding his own until the KO. His shootout with Frankie DePaula was Ring Magazine's 1968 Fight of the Year with Tiger winning a 10-rounder that saw both men hit the canvas. As mentioned previously, his upset win over Middleweight Champion Nino Benvenuti in an over-the-weight fight.
Dick was an ATG monster. If you look at his career history, he got a really late start in the States. (That can't help) I think of Liston in a way in looking at Dick. If they'de been brought along earlier (for both their different reasons) their stock would be even higher. The Tiger-Carter fight is out there (among others) for viewing. A great (although semi-onesided scrap) Dick went out and beat the Hurricane at his own game! I've got the Florentino Fernandez (the great left-hooker) bout as well. All hail Tiger! An ATG fighter in any era.
Dick Tiger was the strongest middleweight champion and he gets nothing but applause from me as a fighter.
It's hard to picture any middleweight in history going toe to toe with "The Tiger" and winning a war of attrition with him. He was as strong as they came and tough as nails.
