Or was he simply outmatched from the get go? Going in Broner was seen as the big favourite and heir apparent to Floyd, that despite a 50-50 fight with Paulie Malignaggi which took some luster off him. After the fight ended the sentiment was that Broner was just ill prepared and fought with the wrong gameplan. But in hindsight, 11 years later, was he just overmatched and he didn't have a chance to begin with? I kind of lean towards this, seeing how well Maidana did with the much superior Floyd just after.
I think he had the tools to beat Maidana. After the initial knockdown that is everyone's social media short clip the fight settled down and Broner fought hard and won rounds and showed heart. I think a lot of it comes down to focus, preparation and execution and that is where I think Maidana had and has Broner beaten. Broner's problems stemmed from what happened outside the ring, he had all the talent in the world to be successful
Maybe after Maidana did so well vs Floyd, but he wasn't that highly rated before and got totally shut out by Devon Alexander not long before.
Broner never had the tools to beat Maidana. People only favored Broner over Maidana because of this false idea of him being the next Mayweather but his previous fights showed that wasn't the case. He should have lost to Daniel Ponce De Leon and also to Malignaggi. Those fights gave us an idea of Broner's major weakness which is getting outworked. It was only a matter of time until someone was going to expose him and Maidana had the right style to bully him.
I tend to agree and think Broner did probably as well as he possibly could have vs Maidana. He was out matched and outgunned but showed a lot of balls.
I give Broner credit for his toughness. For all his flaws and limitations he's able to take a good amount of punishment and not get stopped himself.
No flat footed fighter with a sub 500 punch output over 12 rounds will beat a prime sexually active Maidana Broner was a weight bully who lost to Quintero & Ponce De Leon before Maidana sonned him. Only thing we learned in that fight is he is tough.
