It wasn't a legal punch, so it's not a knockdown. Yes Lewis's glove touched down but you should not get credited with a KD off an illegal shot like a forearm to the noggin. Might as well throw elbows and headbutts in there if we're going down that road. Or does Lewis have a glass forehead? Though in the heat of the action, I'm a bit surprised the ref didn't call it anyway. It takes careful studying of the replay to see it was Akinwande with a forearm and push rather than a punch. Having read up about it, Akinwande's mindset and training was so wrong for this fight. He and his team, possibly based on the thoughts of Don King and certain parts of the media, thought that Lewis would be cautious and casual and looking to jab for several rounds and so on. Akinwande was confident his jab would be able to match Lewis, and that he could keep on the move. Which is all bull**** really, as Lewis instead a). wanted to impress with his first defence of his recaptured WBC title and b). was almost always aggressive against big fighters anyway. Lewis comes steaming in, starts throwings hooks and haymakers, and you can almost see the look of shock on Akinwande's face. If it's a poor fight, it's actually a fairly interesting study on how a weak mentality in a fight can destroy you. Akinwande finds himself practically unable to stop clinching and holding on, even when he knows he shouldn't. His nervous tension contributes to exhaust him, as do the repeated hooks to the body Lewis begins to throw in the clinches when his range game is getting smothered all the time. End result? Akinwande in a daze, unable to do anything except the same thing over and over until he ends up DQ'd. On that level at least, kinda interesting. If Lewis had come in just looking to jab for a bit, it could've been a different fight (if not a different winner).
It's actually interesting that even to this day, a lot of people think about "jabbing safely and boring to a decision" when the name Lennox Lewis comes down. He fought maybe a few fights like that, but most fights were much more aggressive. His style varied a lot from fight to fight, now that i think about it. The only boring fights he had was Mavrovic and Tua, because both of them couldn't make much of a fight out of it. Compare that to the incountable amount of stinkers that Ali had, but no one calls him a boring fighter.
Fair post. It's almost as if Lewis gets judged differently to some due to his immense power. Huge hitters can have borefests too. Tyson - Crusher wasn't exactly awe inspiring and he was the most exciting fighter on the planet for years.
I've often thought the same thing. I personally think if Lewis is in seek and destroy mode, he's pretty damn entertaining. Even when not, he ususally has impressive ring generalmanship.
Lewis seemed to get hit on the top of the head with an elbow, it looks like Lewis is surprised by this and touches the canvas in trying to avoid more damage, maybe a potential cut, he was not hurt in anyway which is obvious.
