They didn't have true granite chins.Chuvalo, Oliver McCall, and Mitch Green had those. But they were on the next level.
They both had great chins and even greater recooperative powers...if peak Mike Tyson had fought Ali when he (Ali) was at the same stage as Holmes, he would have ko'ed Ali as well.
Granite chins are guys like Chuvalo or Oliver Mccall like somebody already stated. Ali was hurt by guys like Doug Jones. Ali had a above average chin but nothing like people who don't know boxing tell you.
Ali`s ... He fought all the big hitters of his time. I actually think that`s the reason why Ali is the way he is today. He took shots that would have (and did) stop most heavies out there. He did that and would almost always come back to win. Where as Clay didn`t get hit much and `rode` with the punches. Ali would lean on the ropes or even fight flat-footed and catch some real bombs. Ali only hit the deck against Frazierin FOTC,sorry Wepner doesn`t count. Holmes ahs a solid chin but the Ali that fought Foreman Shavers and battled through a broken jaw against Norton, that chin was immense !!
No. True granite chins belonged to guys like Tex Cobb, George Chuvalo, David Tua, Oliver McCall, etc. How often did Ali really get tagged flush on the chin by big bangers? AGainst Foreman, Ali rode with most of the punches and blocked a lot of them with his gloves and arms. Foreman beat Ali to the body, but he rarely tagged Ali with a full force punch to the chin the way he did to guys like Norton and Frazier. And Frazier tagged Ali upstairs quite often, but I wouldn't classify Joe Frazier as an elite puncher.
I assure you, Ali WAS tagged on the button... Thats the thing, the post exile Ali, wasn`t as fleet of foot. So he got tagged more solidly by accomplshed nagers. To say that Liston, Foreamn, Frazier or Shavers didn`t get a hard shot on his chin is simply innacurate... Ali was never stopped (he had nothing against Holmes) so to say he didn`t have a granite chin ?? Foolish comment...
Sounds like something pretty incredible when you put it like that, however remember Lewis was only dropped 2 times in the pros. I'm not taking a dig at Lewis' chin, but it's not like it was in the same level as Larry's
Ali arguably belongs with McCall, Cobb, Chuvalo. Holmes doesn't. Shavers is a good barometer. A washed-up Ali absorbed solid, solid Shavers wallops without going down. It took one good Shavers blow to stagger a prime Holmes silly and another one to floor him. I was young when Holmes was champ and I distinctly remember my impression of Holmes was that of a good champion with tremendous heart, but that could be dropped dramatically at any point in the bout by a determined challenger. Granite-chinned is never something I would call Holmes, then or now. On the other hand, Ali in old age absorbed (with his foolish rope-a-dope) so many hard shots without going down that he merits a granite-chinned nod. Howard Cosell was not that far from the truth when he spit out: "There has NEVER been a man, NOT EVER, who can take a punch better than Ali."
Zak's in the social sciences. If he was in the 'hard' sciences, he would know that Iron is harder than granite. :yep
To me, when someone has a granite chin, it means they aren't getting floored.Ali got floored 4 times (fourth one fluke), so it takes him out of the equation.
