The fact that he kept coming forward and took punches to get inside. This usually lead to him losing some of the first rounds, but after 6 or 8 rounds his opponent got tired while Frazier came on stronger. It's a strategy that works great against boxing type of fighters, but not so much against big punchers like Foreman. It guarantees a short prime because you have to go to war every time.

The biggest contribution to Frazier's decline is without a doubt his fight with Ali. The other contribution is his own lack of focus and dedication between '71 and '73.

I thought Frazier looked pretty sharp in '74 against Quarry actually. Except for those pants. Maybe it had more to do with Quarry being past it, but he did just blow Shavers out in one round.

this is basically just another attempt to discredit ali's achievments.there's a growing band on here who at this rate will have ali down as no more than an insignificent bum in a couple of years or so.the answer is simply no he wasn't shot, past his prime yes but shot no.however if they were both past their primes going into the 3rd fight they were certainly shot after it.

Ali was in better condition for the second fight - he had 3 years of fights by that meeting. He moved, tied up and kept of the ropes. He couldn't keep that up in their first meeting after the long lay-off and started to tire badly in the middle to late rounds. Frazier would've got hammered by Foreman if he was fighting him in 1971. Foreman was all wrong for Frazier. 67 Ali was better than any version Frazier fought. But 74 Ali was a better fighter than 71 Ali cuz he was in better fighting shape. Frazier was also better in 71 than 74 so it's hard to assess.

I dont agree ,I thinkFrazier was definitely not the same "freight train "he had been but since it was Ali who had done the damage in the first place via that 15 round beating ,it can only enhance his rep ,imo.

Not shot but definitely not peak,If Ali had been at his best I think he would have won the first Fight,as it was he left a legacy on Frazier.

I have to agree with Groove that a 67' Ali was probably better than a 1970 version, but I couldn't tell you to what extent exactly that he was better. I just have the tendency to think that a near 4 year layoff can diminish a fighters skills a bit.

when you look back it's amazing to think after three and a half years out of the game he comes back straight into fights with jerry quarry and oscar bonavena before tackling frazier.no easy tune ups there then!

He wrote that Ali was better in the 2nd Frazier-fight than in the 1st. Why don´t we say that Frazier was better in their 1st encounter than in the 2nd. You get my point?

Shot is a bit of a strong word to used imo. Shot is Ali Holmes lol.

Fraizer was past his peak. But not shot. Kinda of like Holyfiled was in the mid 1990's vs Tyson or Moore.

Could very well work both ways, and in fact a lot folks feel that Frazier was declining by the Foreman fight due to weight gain, diabetes, highblood pressure etc. I do, however feel that Frazier was in the ultimate peak of his prime in 1971 for fight of the century, while Ali may have been a tad rusty, but again I don't know for sure.

I respect your opinion, but for me he wasn´t peak at the "Thrilla in Manila", and I persecuted his career after he won the gold medal at the Olympics...
