Indeed. He hung around the top for a very long time, was the first to stop Doug Jones and in the eyes of some writer's took Patterson to at least a draw. Had a good reputation for his hard work and toughness, I don't see any shame in taking him on as a short notice opponent, even after an odd uspet loss.

patterson wanted no part of a rematch with chuvalo, after that fight floyd fell to the floor in his corner.yes i think that match could have been a draw, patterson's sunday punch could make big george blink his eyes

Still no disrespect to the 'Great Chuvalo,
Ali's reign of 9 defenses was 'borderline pathetic'.

    Most boxing fans know that.
There were at least 5 other fighters who should have had an opportunity.

That is one man's opinion. But even if there were 100 fighters who you think should have had the opportunity, Chuvalo rose to occassion and was still not an easy defense, reflected in the damage inflicted on Ali and his own personal claims, "he was tougher than Liston or Patterson, toughest man I've fought."

every champion that can be said about i think, they all pick their opponants.at the time ali needed an opponent and chuvalo fit in nicely.who else would you think he'd have fought in canada?george took that fight on 17 days notice if i remember correctly after terrell back out.eddy machen would not have drawn in canada and ali would have ko'd him i'm sure

Also, Chuvalo was still ranked above Machen by the Ring #4 and the WBA#6 I believe. Terrell was the only real consistent "head and shoulders above" contender at the time anyway but the fight fell apart.

    seriously
    youre borderline pathetic
Ali may not have had the strongest title reign 65-67 but he still beat patterson terrell and liston
in addition to this his 70s resume is extremely strong

    The Mongoose,

Very difficult to go by the ratings, as sometimes results from even 3 months before, were not calculated in the printing.

    On the Chuvalo losses;

    11/65 Terrell Wdec 15
    Scoring in Rounds; 10-3-2,,, 10-3-2,,, 9-6-0

    1/66 Corletti wdec 10
Scoring by Referee Harry Gibbs in Rounds; 6-2-2
The British Boxing Press; All 15 writers had Corletti winning.

    Tommy,

Were talking about 65' thru 67',,,not the 70's.
Every single fighter that Ali fought in his first reign had suffered
a brutal loss (mentally and/or physically), before facing Ali.
Do you want me to list them?

    Not that it matters,

But a bout with Ingemar Johannsen was thrown around for 1966.
    Talk about scraping the 'bottom-of-the-ocean'.

Boy, that would have went over like a lead balloon.

Well if Floyd didn't repeatedly call him " Clay" Ali would have ended it in about two or three rounds.
