No doubt, George Chuvalo much tougher than Eduardo Corletti.
But the fact is Corletti won over George earlier.
And did it in the United Kingdom.

Corletti strong, but not big 5' 10" 195 lbs.
Had a pretty good amateur record too.
Main Bouts (promotion unit) had to do something.
An Ali-Corletti bout in Toronto wouldn't have drawn flies.

    Everybody loves George Chuvalo.
Labeling him a 'great guy' would be an under-statement.:good

I never forgot how George Chuvalo was so excited, after he knocked out Manuel Ramos at Madison Square Garden, back in 1968.

Man that was one perfect right hand punch that put Ramos down..:happy

George was dancing all over the ring, after Ref Zack Clayton stopped the fight.

I don't think anybody will argue that Chuvalo was the best active challenger of the time. He was however a tough short notice opponent who was still enjoying a top 10 standing in the WBA and the Ring. Much like he did against Patterson and Jones, he fought to the best of his ability that night and made Ali work hard for his victory. The absolute most deserving contender ever..probably not. but by no means easy opposition.

    Big Jake,

The New York (Madison Square Garden) fans loved George.
The guy always came in shape, and never disappointed.
He resembled one of the masons in the 'Brick Layers' Construction Union.
    Every construction guy loved George.

If I ever need a guy to go into a Bar/Pub with as a back-up for a fight, I could think of no other.

Maybe had the longest 'unbroken' reign of a Top 25 fighter in the history of boxing.
    1958 thru 1973

george chuvalo started his career in 1956 he was rated in the top 10 in 1958 by ring magazine i have those issues here with me.for a long while george didn't have a proper trainer, thats what hurt his career.jack dempsey said hes sure to be heavyweight champ some day after kncking out 3 opponents in 1 night
