I think you've gone a little overboard here, but I do think Ali would have this fight in the bag before the opening bell:yep

ali wasnt a perticuly fast starter, he would usually take it a few rounds to see what he coudl do to get rid of him or beat him up nuff to get the decision.

tyson unlike most people like to belive has very good stamina for a puncher-swarmer in the 12 round era. he also can jab pretty effectivly against boxers...lets not make this a cat and mouse affair.

tyson i think would win 5 rounds at most. the first 3 to start off with, which ali didnt give his full energy to win them. the first round being a very good round for tyson using his more active fight plan to get ali close to the ropes and time him with lead hooks and crosses followed by a combination and a smart jab to get himself in and out of ali's reach (the best jab can be subdued by another jab)

now in the later rounds ali uses his reach and guile to more effect. using the jab and counter right hands to catch the flat footed opponant.
throwing a jab to make tyson move his head and when it moved to the other side throw a rigth hand and clinch (which both men used alot)

to be honest this is gonna be a boring fight.

we have 2 clinchers with rock solid jaws and a standardised gameplan.
clearly gonna be a 12 round decision win for ali

a big reason is that ali's way of tiring guys was clinching...but tyson being so small wouldnt be effected by it.

foreman was tired by cliniching frazier was not
terrell was tired by clinching quarry was not

to the thread starter. yes ali did have "flaws" but these made him ali , it made him frustrating to hit...now you see him, now you dont. he would move back at the last second to make his man miss and pay him back with a jab cross.

he was nifty on his feet, and could create distance in split seconds to make you miss and to give him room for extension on his punches. also his movement was involved to floating to the left and back. so when you you throw a jab to find him he will throw a rigth hand becuase you cant hit him but he coudl find you.
a good example is when he catches williams with a 1-2 while moving to his left.

also frazier beat ali not just due to the brief retirement but his amazing left hook that got ali caught in corners and on ropes. it was so frequent that he was gonna get tagged sooner or later and he was also a ferocious aggresive fighter and could stay under your nose the whole fight and you unable to touch him.

    in the end all.

    Q1:ali ud tyson 12

Q2: unorthodox defence but amazing footwork and timing to avert being hit

It was Ali`s flaws that made him great because no fighter was ever schooled to deal with his moves.

    Ali W12/15 Tyson

ali beats tyson from 1963 to 1974 easily...........he would have beaten tyson before they got in the ring/ali mentally strong.....tyson is not.....tyson cannot handle adversity......ALTHOUGH PRIME TYSON WOULD HAVE BEATEN THE ALI FROM 1975 TO 1981.

Hate to admit it, but this is probably right. On the other hand, 1975-1979 Ali beats a post-prison Tyson. :tong

Tyson would never lay a glove on the 1967 Ali. That Ali would rip him apart like a cheap toy.

Ali of Manila lore, gives Tyson a beating... Cassius Clay, has a picnic with tyson. Really, how could Tyson beat Ali ??? He certainly couldn`t beat him on points. As for knocking out Ali, forget it. Ali`s granite chin was legendary, Shavers, liston, Foreman, Smokin Joe etc. And Ali would have had a field day getting under Tyson`s skin. Tyson was very fast, but Ali(without a doubt) fastest hands and feet ever at heavy...

I think ali would just have to much for tyson, iron mike could punch and his defence was superb, but his lack of height would be his downfall if you charged in at the self proclaimed greatest his best weapon would find you, his jab. Of course tyson had the head movement, but a constant long range straight left is very difficult to evade it doesnt matter who you are.

Alis speed and footwork, would set the precedent for the contest and he would tame the conflagration of the former jail bird, with the same type of stratergy as he executed against foreman, he would absorb some early punishment then stop tyson late in the fight.

Ali's last hurrah was really in Manilla.

(His bout against Holmes was billed as that, but he was geriatric by then).

The post 1975 Ali was a shadow of his former self and would lose to many subsequent champions, including Tyson.

The 1970 -75 Ali was beatable. Frazier did it, and one or two other greats could well have done it too.

The 1964-67 Ali was as near to invincible as any boxer I can imagine.

I cannot think of any version of any boxer who would be favoured over that version.

To see how a fight between that Ali and a prime Tyson might have unfolded, see post #7 above by Chris Pontius.

Ali was a much better fighter than Tyson in a much better era. Ali has proven himself more than just a knockout artist, but a true legend to the sport that will always be remembered. Ali had so much heart it's ridiculous, aside from the freakish boxing ability god gave him, his heart was huge and could take anyones best shot and keep coming... My hat goes off to him... Truly one of the best boxers ever.... For all Tyson's great talent, I cant say the same about him.

Ok, we're basically in agreement here. That Ali would likely lose to a pre-prison Tyson. But the Ali that reclaimed his title from Spinks would likely beat a post-prison Tyson. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :good

Name them and state your case.

    No arguments here.

Hypothetical I know, but how about the 67-70 version of Ali? That guy would have had it all, the speed, the strength, the experience....its a real shame we never got to see that version of Ali.

Pretty much a pickem fight here. I rate Ali as my number one HW, but Tyson is an awesome, awesome fighter and chronically under rated. The era in which he fought in also gets under rated, Tucker, Holmes (old but dangerous) Spinks, Thomas, Biggs, Tubbs, Ruddock, and Bruno are all good/very good fighters Tyson beat up. Heck, he even made Golota quit in 3 rounds when he was a shell of his former self.

I don't know who to pick here, it's basically 50/50 but I might lean toward Ali because he DID possess the superior stamina late in the fight.....

First of all, Ali is not the most flawed of the great figthers, nor is Tyson the most technically proficient. You're being a tad extreme.

But, I do think Ali holds certain weaknesses that could be exposed by Tyson, but the same applies vice versa. It's in essence a 50/50 fight.
