True, he did beat the ref's count. Based on that, he should have been allowed to continue. I'm glad it went down the way it did, though.

I have no problem with the end result, but if i was George i would have been protesting. He did actually chase a rematch for ages. Still think Ali beats him any and every night around this time.

Does the referee pick up the count at 2 or 3? No doubt, he should pick it up at at least 3. If he picks it up at 3 it's a 10 count, not a 9. Is there any possibility that the announcer was off count?

This is my view as well. He was exhausted too. I've no doubt that Ali would've forced a stoppage soon afterwards regardless had Foreman been allowed to continue.

No buddy, you wouldn't have been.

Because you'd have spent the last half hour getting the **** kicked out of you in a tropical jungle. You'd have done exactly what George did - returned meekly to your corner and thanked God that the little voice inside you that had been telling you to "get up" had been foiled, because you would have known that things were just about to get an awful lot worse.

    Where's the he-got-up-but-looked-out-on-his-feet-and-wouldn't-have-made it-through-that-round-or-would've-been-stopped-in-the-next option.

    Ps: George certainly wasn't cheated.

he wasn't up at nine, the commentator is one count behind the ref.

Well, Foreman was done, but since the referee stopped the fight at 9 with Foreman on his feet, it's a technical knockout. I wouldn't say he was "cheated" by a large margin, but he did have to fight entire Africa, the ref included, in addition to Ali (as every Ali opponent in the mid to late 70's).

The only thing I can see from the video is that Foreman is at least 10 seconds on the canvas. I don't see what the referee counts (do anyone?). The commentator has it at nine when the fight is stopped, but he could be wrong. Mailer thought he was.

Yeah, pretty much. It's a brilliant book, though.
