Talking of great fighters who were great in different divisions, McLarnin beat Ambers, Ross and Villa, though the bouts MAY not have taken place in the guy's respective weight class in which he was considered great, might have though?

But hey, even though i credit Burley with beibg a greater middle than he was a welter, he would have been at his h2h best at 147.

Are we taking into account how old and past it the defeated great fighter was? If not, then how about Roy Jones?

    Bernard Hopkins @ 160
    James Toney @ 168
    Felix Trinidad @ a catchweight of 170

Or does the defeated great have to be at (or near) his best, and his ideal division?

The only reason its not near Charles though, is that Angott was a top, you could argue not great or great lightweight of the day. But Burley's best weight was 147 imo, however he was still a great MW for his resume there. Fulmer and Lamotta are great wins imo. Louis was still succesful, but past his own best. Its closer than what you made out imo.

    Sugar Ray Leonard.

He beat a great lightweight in Duran, a great welterweight in Hearns, and a great middleweight in Hagler. An incredible achievement, as is Charles'.

great achievment indeed.......with the one exception being while charleys beat burley in his natural weight class 160lb, leonard beat duran at 147lb above his natural best weight class.

I personally think Burley's best weight was welter, in those days anyway, but he was a great MW.

    Sam Langford:

    Beat Joe Gans at lightweight

Drew against Joe Walcott at welterweight (probably won)

Drew against Stanley Ketchel at middleweight (arguably won)

Beat Jack O'Brien at light heavyweight

    Beat Harry Wills at heavyweight

Fukinhell, if he coulda been given 1 more round over Sharkey he'd have this thread wrapped up!

Just outta curiosity, what would you say Tendler's best weight would have been, im not sure wether 135 or 147,

Do you really think that´s up there with wins like Charles, Walker and Langford scored? Those guys beat their opponents when they were near their best. In none of Jones fights his opponents were near their best. Looks good on paper but not in reality.
