When he had to put up with all the trash talk that Ali fired his way over the course of their trilogy?

I was watching a memorial programme on SS1 this morning about Joe and I felt so sorry for him with what he had to endure from Ali. It was terribly sad. There's having fun and making lighthearted comments in the build up to a fight and then there's getting personal and saying stuff with a lot of malice behind it.

Joe seemed like a good guy.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, Ali overstepped the mark a few times during his career and Frazier was def. one of those.

Yes Frazier was a gentleman, whilst Ali is the greatest heavyweight of all time I've never been a fan.

If they where around today I would be a Frazier fan no doubt.

    Yep.

Joe came across during that segment as a really nice guy, even during his career he seemed really down to earth and when it came to the Ali nonsense he seemed to handle it like a real man would and stayed humble.

There's a picture of him looking out of a window when Ali was trash-talking him and I felt so sorry for him. He really looked depressed about it (understandable, really). Nobody deserves to be talked to like that.

ye frazier didnt do anything wrong to deserve that and if you look at where he ended up living in a run down gym you cant help but feel bad, he became "the other guy" to some extent when he was the equal of ali, but you can never take that night in MSG away from him

    My sentiments exactly, mate. :good

Never been a fan of Ali. And Joe made it easier to be a fan due to his style and the way he conducted himself.

    Joe was the man!

I just assumed (along with everyone else, seemingly) that Ali was the greatest of all time - a sort of Nelson Mandela figure transcending sport because of his great achievements etc blah blah.

And continued to believe that right up until I read a couple of books about him. He seemed a bit of a knobend to me. Frazier went up in my estimation.

It's worth reading Ghosts of Manila; it gives a good insight to the animosity between the two.

i never liked Ali that much, he went too far with it sometimes against Joe, Frazier was a good guy,

before he died Joe should have challenged and made fun of Ali at a game of buckaroo...would have hammered him..

Joe had to do it the hard way!

Ali had it paved his way very easily with strong financial backing. Frazier had no money when he returned with the gold.

If he was in any other era, he'd be the man.
