One thing I was most surprised at was that Chavez didn't look that blown up. He looked like he gained less than 12 lbs between weigh in and fight. That is not JCC Jr boxing. The guys main skill set was that he would blow up in weight so it was like he had a two weight class advantage over opponents. The guy is a crap technician, I seriously thought that the whole "box him in the center of the ring" was a joke, designed to keep the real plan a secret. JCC Jr trained doing the wrong type of fight during training, he didn't have the right body type either. He basically tried to be everything he wasn't in this fight. He was never a good boxer, but being so much bigger with his chin and power let him win fights against better boxers such as Andy Lee. He also came close to upsetting Sergio at one point. I expected a fight similar in nature to the martinez fight, with JCC Jr. winning maybe one round but trying to at least unleash something at the end of the fight. Not saying I expected JCC Jr to win, but man, that was one of the worst game plans I've ever seen. The gameplan didn't include a single one of his strengths other than his height, which didn't matter because he isn't skilled on boxing on the outside. I think the fight could have at least been interesting if he did the normal Chavez routine of blowing up 25 lbs and dwarfing his opponent. It's not hard to see a size difference between the Chavez that showed up last night and the one that fought martinez.
Given that Canelo had by miles superior skills in every aspect, the only way Chavez could make this competitive is by applying constant pressure and throwing a lot of punches, despite the higher risk of getting KOed. I don't think Chavez was physically or mentally prepared for that, so the game plan or the trainer in his corner didn't matter.
Completely agree with this. Think they underestimated the gulf in boxing class between them. Get him big, heavy, walking forward and trying to grind him down - he was never gonna be able to outbox Canelo
Well the gameplan had been to try to box from far away, and there was no way that would ever work. I agree he needed to apply constant pressure, which could get him hurt multiple times, but my point is they didn't do anything to make him able to do that. Should have beefed him up in training, boiled him down for the weigh in, rehydrated and gained 20 lbs. Then I think he had a real shot, I'm surprised the HBO crew didn't talk about his weight much, that was the only thing that made Chavez good. Did they have some kind of rehydration clause? once again though, I'm not thinking Chavez would win, but he'd at least have had a chance and his display wouldn't have been so pathetic. He didn't show much will to fight.
