Did anyone pick Tyrell Biggs to beat Mike Tyson in 1987?

Possibly Mrs. Biggs and Lou Duva,,,,,,,

Tyrell wasn't ready mentally or physically.
His manager (Shelley Finkel) and trainer (Lou Duva) both
sold him out for the $$$ Money.
Biggs was only 27, when they threw him in there.

2-more years, and 10 more soft-touch fights would have never hurt.

In hindsight it was a mismatch but at that time Larry Merchant had actually picked Biggs to win.

Biggs had a lot of experience, and should have been ready, but it had more to do with knowing Biggs was going down the tubes because of drugs. Two years the way he was going, he would have been stopped earlier. He didnt get much better.

Tyson wins this fight anyway, but he fouled the hell out of Biggs in this fight. Over the line type stuff that should have been penalized

Didn't Mike Tyson say, Tyrell was making 'little girl' sounds when he hit him to
    the body.

Still think Biggs wasn't ready. He could have bidded his time, waiting for the right
time to go for the title.
Smartly managed, he could have had 8-10 more easy record building fights, and
wait for Tyson to burn himself out.
Donald Trump pushed the fight big time,,,,,,,,,,,

Just look what happened to him

Tyson had a funny post fight interview but his immaturity was really a reflection of his anger. Tyrell Biggs had ridiculed him during their amateur days because of Tyson's inability to make the Olympic Team. He lost to Henry Tillman twice during the Olympic trials and didn't make the US Olympic team resulting in a grudge against Biggs since he was both vocal about his criticism and he was the Gold Medalist. That would manifest itself in their fight.

Another thing is at the time conventional wisdom was that Tyson was very young and unlikely to burn himself out for at least another decade. While Tyrell may have lacked the big fight experience; Biggs had better opponents leading to his first title fight than Tyson did leading to his first title fight against Berbick. Tyrell was the underdog no doubt about it, but at that time there was not a single active opponent in the world that would have been a favorite against Mike Tyson.

8-10 fights would have meant that in all likelihood Tyrell would be 30 years old
by the time he faced Tyson for his first title fight.

I was 13 years old when this fight came off, and can remember the ads on HBO leading up to the match. Biggs was given a slight chance... When I saw the match, Biggs didn't do too bad in the early fights, but Tyson hammered him to the body and head, and by the 5th round, Tyrell looked as though he was just in their to survive.

    ironchamp,

But Tyrell was a soft 27 going into that fight.
Before that fight, he just didn't look confident.
No one had really put together a 'game plan' for that fight.
I don't think anyone would have blamed him if he said he needed another year or so and more fights.
The problem was that Lou Duva was so infatuated with winning a World Heavyweight Title, that he forgot to bring a 'well prepared' fighter into the ring

I was sold on Povetkin, still holding out hope, but am more than a bit concerned with his recent lack of progress and management.

As for Biggs, I won $100 from my brother on that, who thought he was the next Ali.

Do you mean he improved a bit from a technical perspective?
Iron Mike ruined him both physically & mentally with that skillful sadistic torture.

I think the drugs and lack of focus didnt allow him to get any better as a pro. Duva and company realized he was going to be bust financially and took their Tyson payday. Biggs had the style that should have troubled Tyson, but Tyson was too quick for him. I wouldnt say Tyson ruined Biggs, Biggs ruined himself.

I see what you mean, he was a ticking timebomb with those drug problems.

I do however believe the brutal beating Tyson gave him, scarred poor Biggs for life.

There is no comparison between the hopeless Harrison & the impressively talented Biggs.

Imagine if Fraudley had to face a Lewis & Bowe in the Superheavyweight Olympics, he would have been slaughtered.
