Did anyone pick Tyrell Biggs to beat Mike Tyson in 1987?

    Bingo.

after the Tyson fight, no worthwhile trainer ever wanted anything to do with Biggs again, and in the meantime, Tyrell would spend most of the followig two years either inactive or losing fights. Around January of 1990, I watched Biggs take on Ossie Ocasio, who was a last minute replacement for Carl The truth Williams. The fight was on the undercard of Witherspoon vs simms. Biggs vs Ocasio was a snooze fest between two past prime ex-contenders with no aggression and no power. It was the first time that I had seen Biggs since the Tyson loss, and figured that he was basically done.

Point is, Biggs had fought and beat "Jim Tillis, Jeff Sims, Percell Davis, Renaldo Snipes and Dave Bey" before challenging Mike Tyson in 1987... And with his amatuer career, Biggs was not suppose to be as green as the Jolly Green Giant.... Still, Tyson romped his ass....

Right, and people need to understand that Tyson "was" that good. A pressure fighter who could chop down classy mobile boxers who had huge reach advantages. Biggs was 6'5. All the tall fighters today stand right in front of their opponents.

Magoo - should probably at least see Biggs vs Bowe from '91. Still got thumped by Bowe in the end but that was probably his best losing effort vs a top guy, showed some fire in there and staggered Bowe at one point.

It was Shelley Finkell and Lou Duva's fault.
That kid had no business being in the ring that night versus Tyson.
He was in a personal battle, and should have been nowhere near a boxing ring.

What he needed was 6-months off, and then re-group with about 8-10 easy fights against mediocre opponents for the next 2 years.
Donald Trump pushed for the fight, Finkell and Duva took the short money 'now',
and Biggs was ruined quickly thereafter.

Boxing managers have so little regard for the fighter!

    Xpert post m8!! :thumbsup

They were dumb-dumb greedy managers - they should of just accepted teh Drugs Addictions was a big part of Biggsy's life, just like pro Boxing. :thumbsup

8 or 10 uncompetetive Easy fights VS Mediocre unchallenging grade C opponents while taking more And more crack every year is xactly what Biggsy needed to proper prepare for Tyson...by 1989 he would of been READY to give PEAK Tyson his 1st embaressing loss. :deal

    :rofl:rofl:rofl

    Boxing Managers,
As soon as there is a problem wih a fighter, they make the best deal they can for themsleves, get the fighter beat senseless, and then sell-off his contract.
The next manager, then uses the once 'promising' fighter as a build-up for the next up and coming prospects.
A dozen or so fights later,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Greg Page:-((

Well its not always the managers fault. In the early stages of a fighters career the manager is paying his purse and getting him fights on cards for free or next to nothing. When you have a signficant investment in a fighter and hes screwing off as he starts making more money, you tend to treat him the way hes treating you, which was the case here with Biggs. I cant say I entirely blame Finkel and Co, but theyve been known to rush fighters.

Ever since Kevin Rooney told Vinny Paz that the Duva's weren't treating him properly after his neck was snapped in 1991, I have done some soul searching and have concluded that the Duva's are indeed greedy *******s... The create this phony family atmosphere amongst their stable of fighters... Once they have an issue with one of their boys in the band, they release him... Yeah, real father figures there....

I thought Tyrell had a shot, but after the David Bey fight, I was left with some doubts. But the fight probably did ruin Tyrell's career, in addition, the way Tyson slammed him at that post fight comments, bad.

Biggs boxed well, he had the physical tools and "skills" for the job, but he lacked the mindset to impose himself. Tyson was intense and imposed himself on Biggs. No surprise really, seeing as fading David Bey had made Biggs brawl and had ripped a savage cut onto Biggs eye and had almost beat him. The Bey fight was really an indication that Biggs wasn't ready for Tyson.

Biggs just never managed to translate his size and technique into a well-rounded professional contender. He didn't lack heart, just couldn't manage to use his natural advantages and against top fighters or even fringe guys he almost always lapsed into fighting the other guy's fight.

Drugs and lack of confidence and an uneasy relationship with his management team didn't help.
To be honest, they cashed him in against Tyson before he got beat by someone else.
Also, the heavyweight ranks were so thin he naturally emerged as a "leading contender".

Tyson had a grudge against Biggs dating back to the 1984 Olympic days. In fact he even insinuated that he could have stopped him in the 3rd round but wanted to carry him a few rounds to punish him even more. For all the flak that Tyson gets for getting worse as the fight progressed this was a situation where the opposite was true; he got better and stronger as the fight wore on.

But I think he totally ruined Biggs, even if Biggs was ruining himself, this certainly accelerated the process.\

    As for the question?

Larry Merchant picked Tyrell Biggs to beat him.
