I said it from day 1 that choosing Martinez in a very shot notice is a bad move on team Williams part. They should have choose a fighter that is atleast close to Pavlik 1 dimensional style. I thought team Williams learn a lesson when Cintron post poned the fight and choosing south paw slick fighter Quintana in which the result of the first fight shows it's way too risky to replace a fighter with a whole different style.
i was very impressed how he adjusted after round 3 and again how he finished strong to win last two rounds. i had fight scored 115-113 williams
Martinez don't have a 1 punch power but he can crack. Just ask Cintron. I bet Martinez would beat anyfighters in the mw not name Williams.
I think technically and physically Paul Williams looked the best I have ever seen him. If I were him I would stay at this weight and try my luck in this division. After this fight nobody in the lower weights will want to fight him and theres honestly nobody good enough to challenge him like Martinez did. A good fight for Williams would be Cintron or Pavlik. If he can't land those fights he should try for a fight with Mosley at 154, but 147? At Williams age it would only hold him back if he stayed at 147, he can easily make 154 or 160 and I think his body type is best suited for 160. I think he actually needs to grow into rather than cut down to.
Unlike Margarito Williams actually has technical skills, he just doesn't use them in every round. If you look at certain rounds you can see him doing the sort of things that if he did it the whole fight he would make the fight look easy. You see he can slip punches, he throws an untelegraphed jab which I don't think Mayweather would be able to deal with if he throws it often, he throws very good combinations and he did counter punch against Martinez which is something I don't recall him being so good at prior. He was timing Martinez with his combinations when Martinez would open up on him, and he would get the better of the exchanges. I think for Williams to beat Mosley and PBF he will have to improve his counter punching but beyond this he has all the tools. Mosley was already beaten by Vernon Forrest, and Forrest beat him with the jab. So we know both Mosley and PBF are weak to the jab and the counter punch. Williams could beat them both by starting each of his combinations behind the jab and throwing his power shots toward the end of his combinations, such as double jab lefthook POWER uppercut, or double jab right cross POWER uppercut. After he lands his power shot he should either step back and control the distance or he should grab and hold, he will not beat Mosley at in fighting, and Mayweather would be too hard to hit at that distance.
I don't think so Box, if he can hang with the bigger MW's(I know presently there is not many) that is an achievement by itself. NO WAY 168, there is no way he survies ANY of the top ten 168ers.:good
Hard to say. He did so well against Winky and then he has this fight. The Pavlik fight would answer all the questions I have. If he beat Kelly I would be impressed. Kelly is not a push over.
That post says pretty much the same thing I've been saying all along, so I have no clue what you're prattling on about.
Styles make fights. Winkys game is jabbing and moving forward with a tight defense. Thats kind of hard against a guy who throws non stop punches and is hard to reach with the jab, especially when you dont have a lot of power like Winky. Pavlik is tall himself and throws a good righthand behind his jab and has real good power, so I dont see Williams being able to operate like he usually does, and he'll probably get the **** knocked out of him if he tries.
To me, it reaffirmed my belief in this guy. I already knew what he brought to he table, but this guy is a real fighter.
I've been at odds with you before, but I feel for you right now. There are a whole lotta haters on this site. Paul Williams is becomming a household name, and he can still make 147. You and I both know that Floyd is not itchin for this fight. Floyd is almost strictly a counterpuncher at this stage in his career. Martinez managed to do very well in this position at the beggining of the fight due to his speed, and skill. But Paul's adjustments, along with his size, skill and determination started taking over the fight on the outside. But Martinez made adjustments himself and delivered some bombs that didn't even phase Paul. Floyd who barely scuffed up Marquez is not a puncher, and Paul is not easy to hit without getting hit in return like Marquez and Hatton who are shorter fighters are. Floyd will find himself in a fight, and his punches will be like mosquito bites to Paul. People are deluded if they think this is an easy win for Floyd. He will take punishment in this fight. You know Floyd won't dare mention Paul's name.
