Did Bob Foster hit as hard as ...........

Foster couldn't dent heavyweights.

 

Foster is hard to gauge. The effect his punches had at guys -175 lbs is unprecented. But when he moved up it was a whole different story. Not even Folley was really taken by his power. Ali and Frazier basically moved right through him.

Compared to Tunney, yes he hit hard harder. Compared to Dempsey: Dempsey put the hurt on much bigger men, but their skills was on the other hand on a different planet from Ali, and even Folley and Terrell. Hard to say for sure. But I like to think that a clean punch from Dempsey really would make Ali and Frazier to take notice in a way that Foster's punches didn't.

 

Gibbons was way past his best when Tunney stopped him and basically quit. He was seated and lucid he just couldnt go on. A lot of people thought the Tunney-Madden fight as fixed and Id have to agree. Madden had one of the all time iron jaws. No way Tunney does that to him legitimately. Now Heeney was a tough, strong guy and that was definately impressive. I have always thought that Tunney actually reached his absolute prime in the Heeney fight and then... he retired. We never really got to see what he was truly capable of. Besides, I dont think its a lock that Foster has more power or even power with Tunney, I just think its possible being that Tunney was not known as a powerful puncher.

 

Foster was very one-dimensional. A great hitter if you let him set his enormously wide stance but very predictable. And no, not in the league of Dempsey as a puncher.

He was a master jabber and feinted the **** out of people.

Foster probably hit as the fighters on list barring Dempsey and Patterson. Maybe Holyfield had a bit more meat behind his punches.

Foster's problem was his lanky build and lack of strength when up against heavier opponents. He couldn't impose himself the same way he did on opponents of equal weight - that's all it comes down to.

 

tap, tap, bam. that's what i saw in Foster. And it was enough to rule his division with impunity. As you say, he was able to impose himself at 175, which was not the case at HW.

 

He was one of the greatest ring generals ever to fight at light-heavy and no way on this earth was he anything like one-dimensional. At all. Ever.

 

I could not agree more.

 

Foster had the power to damage HWs he just didnt have the durability/strength to get his big left hook off on them before they walked him down. He was also pre-prime for allot of his HW fights and then faced Ali/Frazier who were always going to be a nightmare for any LHW

 

Foster seemed to drop loads of power at Heavyweight, but so did Spinks and Spinks fought way heavier than Bob up there. I tentatively (hard to judge some from well back) rate these two my hardest hitters at 175 ever. I take no notice at all of their effectiveness at Heavy when judging the power of these two at 175.

 

I would think Dempsey hit harder so did Moorer at heavy. Holyfield and Patterson might have a little more power but he hit harder then all the others with Moore, Spinks and Charles just behind him.

 

Did anyone ever hit harder P4P than Foster, Hearns and Wilde at their best? I'd hate to put my life on it.

 

Possibly Walcott or Satterfield. Foster is right up there in terms of p4p power.
